Hey everyone,

This year I signed up for precalculus, but I can't stand the course. The problem is not that I dislike math or the teacher, but all we've done for the first two months is review material from last year and I feel like it's a waste of time. I've only done one homework the whole year so far and paid attention to only one class and my average is still in the A range.

I find that when I teach myself I learn the material better and I enjoy it more. I was thinking of asking my guidance counselor about this, but I didn't want to make a fool out of myself if there was no way to do it so I thought I'd ask here. I know I can do it - I taught myself French I and II in two weeks over the summer and skipped them (I started French III this year) so I'm sure I can do Precalc.

What do you guys think I should do? The class is a total waste of time for me, I really just sit there staring at my desk for 45 minutes a day.

Erm…you learnt an entire language (or the basics) in two weeks?

And pre-calc is basically Alg 2 and some more, so of course it’s going to be a lot of review.

Talk to your guidance conselour.

I feel like this in Algebra II since I wasn’t allowed to test out of the class and I’ve learned it all already. It’s a really sulky feeling.

French I and II are not that hard, it’s just past tenses, present tenses, and some vocab. It’s probably about half a semester of college french.

If I talk to my guidance counselor do you think he will think I’m really strange? I feel like this is “going around the system” or something and would just get them mad.

Nah, that’s what guidance conselours are for. I wouldn’t think conselours would get mad. It doesn’t hurt to try, does it?

Ask your guidance counselor for permission. Two of my friends have done that with learning Mandarin Chinese.

If you take the AP exams that relate to what you teach yourself, then you should receive credit. Good luck. If you have any questions about teaching yourself and receiving college credit, please do not hesitate to send me an email message. I received over 80 credits through AP examinations.
