Is there any way to get out of paying for out of state tuition

@ooohcollege‌ Engineering? Nice. Have you decided on which one? I’ll studying Aerospace engineering at SJSU this fall. Some school recommendations if your considering engineering (In no particular order) would be Cal Poly SLO, SDSU, UCI, UCLA, UCB, SJSU, CSULB, UCD, Cal Tech (Super selective IMO), Stanford, and Cal Poly Pomona (Within CA of course).

Im thinking maybe civil or industrial (with a minor in Econ). I eventually want to go into investment banking and if that doesn’t work out, I can always fall back on engineering.

There is a bit of misinformation about Berkeley’s top merit awards in a couple of posts. The part that is correct: Yes, highly qualified OOS applicants are sometimes awarded the Regent’s and Chancellor’s Scholarships at UC Berkeley.

The misinformation is the suggestion that earning one of those prestigious awards would assist the OP with his predicament. The OP has stated that his parents can afford to pay $60,000/year (he hasn’t stated that they would,, just that they are in a financial position to do so). Berkeley’s Regents and Chancellor’s awards are an honorarium of $2,500/year for a total of $10,000 over four years for awardees without financial need. Awardees with financial need have their demonstrated need met without loans.

http://financialaid.berkeley.edu/regents-and-chancellors-scholarship

As this student is not likely to demonstrate need, the tiny % of a chance that he would be awarded Berkeley’s top scholarships would not make much of a dent in the $55,000+ OOS costs.

If the OP is a NMF, he might consider USC which offers a 1/2 tuition scholarship to NMF. The overall cost would still approach $40,000 after the scholarship, but it would still be California and would be $60,000+ cheaper than a UC over 4 years.

Good luck

I guess we have different ideas about the word belittle

Rutgers is ABET accredited so they have essentially the same engineering program as the UCs. You could also look at NJIT and Stevens

OP…full rides are not all that common.

I suggest you look at the thread with a stickie at the top of this forum…automatic full tuition/full ride scholarships…and see where you will be eligible to receive the aid you desire.

The problem I have with Rutgers is just about anyone can get it. I do not like that aspect and if you belief that analysis is unfair to the school well that is your opinion. Stevens is another potential option and i guess I’m legacy there (if that even matters). I do not believe Rutgers has the same quality (I did not mean to say that they had no quality of education just not on the same level as Cal and UCLA) education program as the top two UCs but they still have a respectable program.

I was raised going in to high school that I absolutely should not go there because my family has a track record of going to some top schools in the last 10 years. I have since realized that all the negative that was said about Rutgers is not necessarily true and it could very well be the college I will be attending. I said that it was an option and I could potentially go there. I am interested in going to a prestigious school because my intended future profession puts a lot of weight into that.

I also didn’t expect such a response in this thread and thank you everyone for the input.
