Mid-October of last year, I asked 3 of my teachers for recommendation letters. They were finished by the end of November, and I gave them to my counselor to send along with my transcript.

The deadline for this application was January 15th...plenty of time to spare.

A week after giving them to my counselor, I stopped in her office and asked if she'd sent them already. She assured me that she did, and I assumed she wasn't lying.

Today, a week after deadline and over a month after giving the materials to my counselor, I received an email from the University saying that they hadn't received 2 of my recommendations. The one they did receive was postmarked JANUARY 19th, PAST DEADLINE.

Your counselor owes you, and the adult of your choice, the courtesy of a phone call and any necessary corrective action to the college while you are said adult are present.

And perhaps the teachers kept copies of the letters they wrote (I do). If so, maybe they would be willing to send them – on their own – to the Adm office of the college, with a covering note.

You should provide the teachers with a stamped envelope all ready to go. Make it as easy as you can, to say Yes.

This kind of incompetence does actually occur. The college has not made its admissions decision about you yet and they know you did not make this happen. Or they will when they get the letters from the teachers saying that you were timely with your responsibilities and it was in the guidance office where the delay took place.

BTW did the transcript also get there late?

The deadline is for YOU to get your part in, adcoms acknowledge teachers, counselors, and others are going to come later sometimes.

If your counselor mailed the documents, it’s possible they got lost somewhere. My dd received an acceptance 9 days after it was mailed by the college. Things happen.

Contact the colleges, contact your gc, and have everything sent again ASAP.

Also keep in mind that a lot of colleges are still sorting out papers, test scores, recs, apps, etc. and it is likely your other recs haven’t been put into your file yet. Most colleges will contact you in early Februray if something is still missing and will give you a 7-10 days to get it into them. So don’t worry. As long as your part was in, the adcoms will be understanding.

@ Beautifulnights, the system is different in every school. In my school we give all our paperwork (recs, resume, etc) to the gc and they mail it out.

Most colleges will not deny your application because the teachers’ recommendations are late. So long as your part of the application arrives within a few days of the deadline, you are fine. You should not have to worry until late February. If you were rejected because the teacher’s recommendations were late, that school isn’t good enough for you anyway.
