And if you did, how did you or whomever you know turn out?
Where do you want to apply to college? Why do you think even one AP class is necessary? What would you want to use an AP score for?
Happykid sent in portfolios for AP 2D Studio Art two different years. She also took the AP English Lang exam. None of those got her credit or placement in college. What was useful for college, was the Spanish CLEP exam. She got 12 semester hours of credit for her CLEP score.
Many people graduate with no AP classes. You need to apply to colleges that fit your academic profile (to include class schedule rigor, GPA, standardized tests).
Many schools don’t even offer AP classes.
Absolutely. Lots and lots of kids do not load up on AP classes. You will have no problems other than possibly getting into the super super elite schools. But then again, those are near impossible to get into even with tons of AP classes.
People who took one or no AP classes turned out just fine. My mantra is that you should only take the AP classes that actually interest you.
- They are for the most part rote classes, too much canned info packed into a tight schedule;
- Despite advertising, they don't really relate that much to college classes--either the experience of the classes or the material in those classes.
I’m really not sure what good they do, except 1) make money for the College Board (yes, yes, I know it’s a nonprofit, but people there are making loads of cash and they don’t seem to be doing much genuine service to the world IMHO); 2) stress students out; 3) keep students from true inquiry-based learning; 4) provide credits for truly low-income people who may need them; 5) show some few schools that you can drive yourself forward through material regardless of how unrelenting it is and how rote/ canned/ useless / boring it may be. 6) show those schools that you’re able to drive towards goals that others erect, no matter how objectively meaningless are those goals.
The vast majority of colleges don’t give two ounces of care about them. IMHO.
My personal view is that you’re better off taking classes that truly interest you. Interest-driven learning, inquiry-based learning–learning that interests you–is far more powerful than rote memorization and regurgitation of commonly agreed-upon events or ideas. Inquiry-based learning will allow you to better come up with your own creative ideas and methods, which is the bases for innovation and positive change in the world.

Were you asking in regards to yourself (if you’re planning on taking an AP) or were you just curious? Just wondering.
Sorry, I should clarify. I’m just curious about the people on this board. Hopefully someone moves this discussion to a board that’s more appropriate.
Yes, my bff. She’s headed to the U of Idaho next year.
