This is my second semester taking it so I REALLY can't afford to screw up. I don't want to use excuses, but I am NOT a stupid person. Math is just not my thing. Many people I know in the class with me are also working just as, if not harder, than I am and still doing poorly. I currently have a D+ in the class with two more tests to go, and I am so frustrated. The material and homework isn't hard, yet I can't seem to do well... it's driving me crazy. I did really well first semester at IU and I don't want this class to screw my GPA up. :( At the lowest, I'd like to achieve a C- and at least get a passing credit for it.

Basically, I just want to hear finite success stories and help because this is really stressing me out :( Thanks guys. Maybe other people can use this thread for help too, because I know it's a class that brings a lot of people down.

A C- would probably hurt your gpa quite a bit. Could you drop it, avoid the stress, and make it up somehow. How many credits are you taking. Would it affect your full time status if you dropped? It is too late to add any classes, I think, except for maybe some HPER O one-credit courses which first meet in April because they have an outdoors component.
If you dropped, you might take finite at Ivy Tech some fall or spring semester, get a C in it there, and transfer the credit to IU. Much easier at Ivy Tech. Finite is quirky and difficult for many smart people, so I wouldn’t take it personally not doing well in the class. S has a top ten percent gpa at Kelley after Icore, but had an F in finite after the first test and had to drop it. He probably wouldn’t even have got into Kelley if it depended on getting a B in finite.

I know IU won’t accept transfer credit for finite math from any cc’s in California. Have you considered calculus to meet the School of Journalism math requirement. Here is a class at Moorpark College offered in summer: MATH M16A 0 3.00 Applied Calculus I Moorpark College JUN 20, 2011-JUL 14, 2011 MTWR 2:00pm- 5:15pm AC 307 Instructor(s): Mahyad Z. Rahnamaie. This class will transfer to IU as M119, per the credit transfer website. It is like a calculus for social science majors. It only meets four weeks. Here is the teacher ratemyprofessor rating
[MahyadRahnamaie - Moorpark College - RateMyProfessors.com](<a href=“Mahyad Rahnamaie at Moorpark College | Rate My Professors”>Mahyad Rahnamaie at Moorpark College | Rate My Professors)

You have three more years to meet the math requirement, and I might not damage my gpa if I still had other options.

Also, you can take D116 (2 cr.) and D117 (2 cr.) instead of M118 or A118. Those classes take a whole semester to cover the equivalent of one-half semester of regular finite.

Also, the school of journalism bulletin states as fulfilling the math requirement:

–“One college-level mathematics course”–

You might ask your advisor, since no specific math classes are mentioned as being required/u to fulfill the requirement, if you can use “undistributed credit” from a transfered one-hundred level to fulfill the requirement. Finite math transfers from the College of the Canyons as four undistributed one-hundred level credits. Maybe that would be enough to fulfill the requirement. Maybe you could find an online version of finite in a cc in California that would give you undistributed one-hundred level credit, as I don’t think there are any finite classes in California cc’s that will give credit specifically for M118.

Do they still have that finite web show with McKinley? That’s what I used. I also for whatever reason never read the book and just tried to understand the stuff through intuition and practice. Also, I remember going to the Academic tutors in the residence centers for help if they still have those.

Sit in on McKinley’s M118 lectures (but still go to your own). No one’ll know you’re not in the class and he explains the material better than any of the other professors.
