Is there FA available prior to decisons?

I am being somewhat tongue in cheek here but am wondering how we are going to manage two out of state visits and a housing deposit all within the same time frame that our property and income taxes are due.

It would actually be terribly helpful if there were small balance unsecured loans that could be taken out at this time of year to get those of us with need over the hump.

You would have to rely on private loans to help you through these expenses.

Some schools will help pay for the visit if you are a distance away. Two of S’s schools did. These are schools that are eager to get a wider geographical distribution of students. Call and ask if any such thing is available. Otherwise, look for cheapie flights, trains, buses or car pooling with other students from your area also looking to visit. Find out if they can host the student in a dorm with current students. Nearly every college will give meal vouchers at the cafeterias for visitors. You can bring that cost down low. Housing deposits are a whole other story. You have to come up with the $$$s for those yourself.

Worth asking…but these “paid for” visits are usually for HIGHLY wanted applicants…not just any student who requests it.

It’s concerning to me that you are worried about the cost of a visit and/or the housing deposit which is pennies in the bucket compared to the cost of the college tuition, room & board, not to mention the cost of getting home for Christmas, getting there in the fall, getting back home in the summer…as my mom would say you are putting the cart before the horse.

Could be that the OP is in line to get a nice fin aid offer from full need met schools, but that would not include visit money, unless you discuss it directly with the school. Most such schools will give a student some money to visit. The amount of money for visits can be very high if not planned with austerity in mind. You can make it a full band visit with all the hoops and hulas with the family tagging along for vacation, or you can do it on a shoestring. We’ve done it both ways.
