Is there more to do than drink?

I am considering a transfer to Tulane. Ok we all know people party everywhere. My question is that if you don't want to drink all the time will you have things to do? Drinking can be fun yeah but not 24 hours a day. Also if you can comment on Tulanes academics I would really appreciate it.

I guess I was just worried I would not fit in. Everything I hear about Tulane sounds great. I hope I get in for Spring 2008. I really want to go there! My app went complete a few days ago. I hope I hear soon....

you won't think so when you first come here, but later on you will learn to appreciate the city and see beyond what's most obvious about it — that people love to come here to drink.

My RA is a Tulane grad and let's just say I havent heard him mention anything about it that didnt include the words wasted, alcohol or party. Yes.

morgoth:

what year are you in college and what major are you applying for? i applied for the spring 2008 term, and i already got in! i've even received my scholarship notification and now i'm just waiting on the financial aid stuff to come in the mail. hopefully it all comes soon because the deposit it due in about 2 weeks.

what are your stats?

A view from the other side of the drinking question. My daughter is a freshman at Tulane and is a non-drinker. I don't mean she doesn't have a lot.. she is a total non-drinker... Now 3 months into her college experience she has found several friends who either don't drink or don't drink a lot and has been very comfortable about "fitting in". She is enjoying the campus life and the city -- and yes, there are lots of other things to do in New Orleans other than drink.

Well I don't feel like posting all my stats but GPA UW 3.7 and W 4.3 and ACT 26 (ouch but im like a huge splitter 33 reading 21 math for example) Lol. I have some good ECs including a state speech championship. If you really want to see them you can check my profile. I will be a second semester freshman. When did your app go complete and how long after that did you get a decision? It will take longer now with all the freshies applying though.

wow, we're pretty much in the same boat--- test scores, GPA, EC's.. everything. i believe i applied around mid-october and checked my status online a week and a half later because it's rolling admissions. it took almost a month to finally get my official letter in the mail.

i think you have a pretty high chance of getting accepted. although i'm wondering how they're gonna get you all the information on time especially since the commitment deposit is due on december 1st.

i guess the admissions office is pretty much awesome because i've never had a problem with them!

I'm a sophomore here at Tulane -- trust me that there is far more to do than drink! New Orleans is a large, vibrant city with the best live music I've seen anywhere. The food's amazing, there's a festival nearly every weekend, and there is a sizeable, sociable community of non-drinkers here. And they're not the quiet, religious type either, so don't worry about that.

The New Orleans opera performs here on campus, Downtown and the French Quarter host tons of galleries, museums, etc... Oak Street and Magazine Street have some crazy awesome coffee houses.

You also won't be ostracized if you choose not to drink--there's very little, if any pressure, to drink. We're adult, laid back people--as someone who does choose to drink, I frequently do so in the company of non-drinking friends in a barm or even at my fraternity. (Many of my closest friends don't drink.) We all mix and mingle socially here; you're not pressured, you're free to chill in a drinking environment even as a nondrinker.

Hope this answers your question...

There is, but like you, I'm not a drinker. Not usually, that is. You can definitely find people who don't drink, but the vast majority are HUGEEEEEEEEE partiers who love to talk about it and how many hookups they had lol.

i got accepted for fall 08 very early, but its been a couple of weeks and i haven't heard about any scholarship. I'm apply for the dean's but it's a long shot. When will i hear about money?

unfortunately, i'm pretty sure they include scholarship information with the original letter of recommendation...at least thaths what they did for me.

In previous years, many students heard about the DSA/Founders a couple weeks or so after acceptance - just after Christmas, as I recall.

DHS is the separate application and the date is later (I forget when).

If you really want to go there, and do not hear or do not get the DSA/Founders, give them a call. Some have been successful in having these re-looked at and getting awards this way.

"You can't drink all day if you don't start in the morning."

Kidding, of course.

Jeremy... don't stereotype us all, because I have a drink maybe once every two weeks. My friends are the same or don't drink at all--and the same goes for many of my frat brothers. I'm sorry if you think that that's all we do, but you are a freshman--and first semester freshman year is that time when independence kind of hits us all and we go a little crazy. Give it time! You'll see those same kids settle down, so don't be so quick to pass judgment.

Think of it this way: those kids who are huge drinkers tend to be pretty damn vocal about their habits and where and how much they drank. I know I don't really trade stories about how much jazz I TOTALLY LISTENED TO, YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW. Take it in stride, man--and there are nondrinkers! Join some student organizations, attend some of the on-campus events... and you'll meet them. I swear.

Yes, a ton. That's what makes New Orleans so wonderful. It's just that the overall culture at Tulane doesn't foster it very much. Beer > most things for most students.

You will find people who share your interests, they definitely exist. But the overall atmosphere of the school is a party school one.
