The famous example on CC is the 800 vs 750+ dilemma. I always read that having a 750 doesn't really make much of a difference. But is this true? For example, an 800 in Math 2 would put you in the 87th %ile while 750 would put you in the 73rd. That's already a 14% difference. Likewise, an 800 in Bio-M is 97% while 750 is 84% - a 13% leap.

Maybe 50 points is too big of a gap, but my big question is: in subject tests, is a 750 really negligible compared to an 800?

This is a good question, albeit one that’s really impossible to give a legitimate answer to. I would reckon that, no, a 750 and 800 are NOT viewed as identical, but I don’t think that an applicant with 750s on his SAT IIs is at a major disadvantage to someone with 800s. Other factors would probably be a lot more important.

Hahaha. If they’re not viewed the same, then probably either the importance of SAT 2’s are relatively small compared to the rest of an application - and hence wouldn’t make a slight difference - or a 750 is overestimated.

How come you’re answering your own question…? lol sorry.

IMO it’s a significant difference, but as blankk said, it would be very hard to determine the actual impact on a college app. It could, however, be important if you are declaring a specific major, say Engineering, and score 50 points lower on the Physics SAT II
