My daughter loves musical theater and drama, but she won't be majoring in them? Is there room for non-major to participate and in what way?

My D as well…would be interested in hearing some insight, too.

I guess it depends on what you mean by ‘participating’. There are lots of performing opportunities other than main stage productions. Main stage production auditions are still open to the entire campus no matter what ones major is, but from what I remember, it’s usually the theater/music/dance majors who get the large majority of roles. They typically only do one main stage musical a year, other than the Summer Musical Program which is sort of like a summer stock opportunity and produces three shows each summer. And of course there are lots of opportunities to get involved via tech work, etc.

I know a number of students who have also use the school’s proximity to the Civic Theatre of Allentown to get involved with their productions, too.

There is room for non majors but it is VERY competitive. Even the majors don’t always get cast in the main stage productions. However, there are a lot of other performing opportunities: A Capella groups, blackbox (often student directed) shows, Red Door Festival (one acts, student directed), New Play Reading Series, sketch comedy groups and more. And as Teriwtt says, Civic Theater also has great opps for Mberg students.

Was writing something excessively long, but I’ll save you the trouble & simply say:

Definitely.

I’m a first year student here, not a theatre major, & I’ve been just as lucky and unlucky as my Theatre major friends have been. I was not cast in anything my first semester, but neither were most of my Theatre-major friends. We were all cast in at least one play this semester, though.

Basically, if your daughter is deemed the right fit for a part, she will likely be chosen regardless of her major (I say “likely” because I cannot read the minds of the directors-- I just speak from what I’ve observed, from perusing the major distribution in countless Muhlenberg playbill bios and also through personal experience).

Not going to bore you with excessive detail, but if you feel like you could benefit from some, I’d gladly tell you anything else you’d wish to know!
