In the Ellicot Complex, specifically Richmond? And is it reliable? (Doesn't fade in and out and decent speed)

I know rooms come with ethernet ports, but I rather not have to buy an Ethernet cable unless I know I need it. And how long should the cord be? People say if you are the farthest from the ports you will need around 10 feet to each, maybe a bit more to be flexible.

I believe there is wireless in every dorm except for Governors. But you’d be stupid not to have an ethernet cable.

Wireless is generally 2-10 mbps on campus, depending on location and how many people are using it. Wired is upwards of 25-50 mbps. Much faster.

Ethernet cables are cheap and provide a much better connection.

10 feet will be long enough if your computer is within 10 feet of the port. Meaning if the port is on your side of the room, you’re OK. If it’s on the other side, it’s likely not long enough. I’d get at least a 25 foot cable, so you can wrap it around the room if you’re on the other side.

I agree with 007, wireless is available most places on north campus, but can be spotty, especially in buildings like Knox, where the thick walls prevent wireless signals from being transmitted very far. On south campus, the wireless signal depends on what building you are in. For Ellicott, the brick walls and older construction of the building makes the wireless signal spotty. When I was last in the dorms (2 years ago), they were trying to install wireless routers in each hallway to remedy that issue.

Essentially, like 007 said, you would be foolish to not buy an Ethernet cable for your dorm room. The speeds with an ethernet cable are noticeably faster than using wireless. You can most likely depend on wireless when you are away from your dorm room, but you might as well take advantage of the extra speed when you are in your room, especially considering an Ethernet cable isn’t a pricey investment
