Is this a bad essay idea for a transfer?

For all the “why do you want to transfer?” essays, I was going to write about how I can’t afford my current school but a top school would be cheaper due to financial aid, but I’m having second thoughts. Any opinions?

To be clear, I’m having second thoughts because I doubt a school would want to accept a student who’s clearly showing they will need a lot of aid vs an equally qualified student who doesn’t need aid.

Don’t write that the only reason you want a school is because it’s cheaper. Really? That’s like saying, I really wanted to date this other girl, but she’s out of my league, so I settled for you.

I think you misunderstood. I attend a mid-tier school but I want to transfer because top-tiers offer more financial aid.

Remember the point of the essay: to give them a reason to say yes.

So, yes, economic realities are certainly part of the equation.

But as @lindyk8 mentioned, no one wants to read that you want to go there because they’re cheap. Every school prides itself on so much more than the bottom line.

What ELSE about that school makes it the right fit? Find some reasons that you would have started there, instead of some other school with the same economic stats, had you had the chance to do it all over again. Speak about the programs they offer, the internships, the feeling of community you got when you visited.
