Is this a bad idea?

I'm looking at the Claremont Essay Prompt and it asks who you would invite to speak at the Athenaeum if you could choose anyone and why you would choose that person.

Could I write about someone who is no longer alive?

That sounds like it shouldn’t be a problem, but read the exact wording of the prompt carefully a few times first.

I would say that anyone doesn’t necessarily mean living.

Wow. I totally missed the 3rd sentence ahaha
Leadership is a constant theme and emphasis at CMC. In fact, one of the ways we describe CMC students is “Leaders in the Making.” Choose someone, fictional or nonfictional, historical or contemporary, whom you consider to be a leader. Suppose you are this person’s primary advisor. How would you advise this person and why?

wait hold on. I have a different essay question on the paper version in front of me… O.O

Ok, HERE IS THE 2013 version. The wording is more vague.
Leadership is a constant theme and emphasis at CMC. One way CMC emphasizes leadership is through the Athenaeum Speaker Series (www.cmc.edu/mmca), which enables CMC students to dine with leaders from a wide range of fields every
weeknight during the academic year. Recent speakers have included authors, activists, entrepreneurs, scientists, professors, politicians, and more. If you could invite anyone to speak at the Athenaeum, who would you choose and why?

I know this is a bit ridiculous but I have another question: They ask for you to list a person who had the greatest positive impact on the world in the last 50 years. Could I say someone who did something in mid 1962 since that’s technically 50 and 1/4 years ago? I mean technically the IMPACT would be over the last 50 years but I’m not sure how deeply the adcoms are going to dig into this since I just list a name of a person.

1962 is def. within the range! Don’t worry! If it’s a meaningful impact then I do not see a problem.
And for your first question, you can always contact the admissions office (even make a new email account if you’re worried) or call them up. They can’t penalize you if the wording is that open.

I am wondering if Mahatma Gandhi is too cliched an answer for the impact over the last 50 years question.

Also i too am writing about a person who has been dead for 400 years now.

Do you think it is a bad idea to write about Ayaan Hirsi Ali? She’s definitely considered an influential leader but she is also highly HIGHLY controversial (heavily opposes Islamic practices, accused of lying to gain refugee status in Holland when she first escaped Somalia, massive uproar from the Muslim community and the list goes on…) I do know plenty about her just from my reading prior to this but am also aware that Ali’s stance might not be well received if she were to “speak at the Athenaeum”. Opinions? Thanks!
