When they asked for my parents' tax returns to be signed, all I did was draw a line on the first page and had my mom sign it. But I turned to the second page of the 1040 and there were specific boxes for my parents to sign. Will my IDOC be delayed because of this?

Bump. I’m already late on the FA process as is, so any help is appreciated right now

Didn’t you say on another thread that your Dad is a CPA? He would know what a “signed tax return” and I’m sure your mother would too.

Problem is, the boxes where the signatures are supposed to go were blank. Before I mailed my IDOC stuff, I just handwrote a line for my mom to sign at the front page.

I doubt anyone out here has had that problem and can answer your question… hard to say. You could call the schools and ask them (but different schools may treat it differently). Or wait and see if they contact you.

Again - a few days ago you were complaining that your parents weren’t sending their tax return, and that Dad is a CPA.

Now you’re talking about sending a tax return signed only by your mother (and on the first page). Schools are looking for a signed copy of the tax return - that would be a return signed by BOTH parents, in the correct place, in the boxes on page 2. Of course the boxes were blank - that’s where they sign!

It sounds to me like you’re trying to send something other than your parents’ real tax return, and the WILL cause problems. Your mother probably thought you wanted the first page signed as well.

If you want to know how much of a problem this will be, contact the schools who need your IDOC information. They will probably tell you to send them a real signed copy of the return. Stop trying to push your parents through this process.

or you might have sent the “copies” that were printed from the online tax software. Those copies would not have been printed with signatures. But you need to make sure what you sent are the official tax returns and not just an earlier draft version.

So check with your parents and have them both sign on the page where it asks for their signature and mail that copy ASAP. Put a sticky note to replace the earlier copy.

What you did is ok. And yes, some parents have to be pushed through the process. Some parents don’t recognize the necessity of getting this info in on time.

But don’t “fudge” their info or their signatures. Federal Income taxes are official legal documents.

CTScoutmom: jerzgrlmom is right, so please don’t jump into any conclusions. What I sent were copies of my parents’ REAL tax returns, printed from the online software. So I did NOT pull this document out of a hat and magically filled it with random numbers.

I just totally missed where the two signature boxes were, and I was in a rush trying to mail these, so I just drew a line at the top and figured that my mom’s signature would suffice. Now that I’ve seen those two boxes, I should probably send College Board another copy, with a sticky note.

I’d check with College Board (or the colleges themselves) before you send anything else off to College Board. CB wants to get the entire IDOC packet at once . . . and who knows what they do when a duplicate is sent in later! Check with everyone first . . . but you might need to send the signed copy to the colleges directly.

I agree. I meant to send your update directly to your school(s). We had to do that with our updated Profile. I suggest calling the school(s) first. My son’s school wants electronic copies (no paper).
