<p>I agree - yes, it’s a common topic, but all common topics have the potential to work if you go about writing them in an uncommon way (focus on what makes YOUR experience unique from others who were also afraid to embrace their cultures).</p>
<p>Just write about your personal experiences and the essay will be unique.</p>
<p>As long as you use a story that is unique to you and doesn’t address that topic in general, you should be fine. </p>
<p>It’s sort of common, but the key is to make it personal and believable. For example – if you’re going to write about how hard it was to embrace Hispanic culture while living in Texas or how you stood out as an Indian in a Northern NJ high school – the adcom will roll their eyes a bit. That’s different from talking about how it was being the only Indian family in Fremont Nebraska – little more believable that it could have been difficult for you.</p>

<p>Probably a good idea. It is easier to start with an original topic rather than make an overused topic original. </p>
