Is this a good backup plan?

I highly doubt that I will be accepted into the University of Maryland-College Park. I do have a 3.8 GPA, but I wasn't enrolled in the most challenging courses (completely against my power at my school). My other stats are a 920/1600 or 1430/2400 SAT (they have gone up since; unfortunately, I was not able to send the updated scores in time to meet UMD's priority deadline), and a 180/325 cumulative class rank. I do have many positive subjective stats, but they just won't outweigh the sub-par objective ones. If I don't get into Maryland, what I plan to do is enroll in a community college. If you've ever heard of Bethlehem Community College, that's where I'm looking at. I think it would be very beneficial for three reasons. First of all, I would have the opportunity to attain higher stats. Secondly, with my GPA I would be accepted into their honors program. And finally, as my name indicates, I aspire to be a doctor, so this will be a great cost saving measure. If I do well there, I can transfer to Maryland, where good times, a great education, and a FREE apartment will await me! So how competitive is transfer admission at UMD? Will they need my high school stuff? Do you think my backup plan is a good one? Thanks everyone!

What state is that CC in? Admission for transfers from the MD CCs is pretty straightforward. Howeverthat may not be true if you are OOS.

If UMCP is out of state for you, have you considered the out-of-state tuition costs?

[Office of Undergraduate Admissions · University of Maryland Transfer Students](http://www.admissions.umd.edu/requirements/TransferStudents.php) says that high school related records and SAT/ACT scores are only needed for transfer students with fewer than 30 semester or 45 quarter credit units of college credit (approximately a year’s worth of college course work).

You may want to ask on the pre-med forum about transferring from CC. Medical schools supposedly frown on taking all of your pre-med courses at CC (even though they are typically all available as prerequisite courses for aspiring biology majors), so you may have to save some of them for after transfer, or take a few more advanced biology/biochemistry/chemistry courses after transfer. Other things to consider and ask on the pre-med forum about are pre-med extracurriculars, preparing for the MCAT, and the like. All college grades are important, and biology/chemistry/physics/math grades are especially important.

Huh, doc?

The only Bethlehem College I can find is a small, very religiously focused school in Minneapolis. For someone who wants premed, this place would be somewhere behind Plan Z.

What happened to the HBCU list? Even Penn State/Altoona would be better because your intro science classes would be small.

Isn’t Delco or Montco your home community college? Why not one of those?

And, by the way, does your Campus Apartment come with a cook and housekeeper? The ones in my neighborhood don’t. Do you really want to deal with those responsibilities as well as schoolwork?

Please rethink.

@WordWorker My mistake, I meant Northampton Community College. Yes, Delco is my home county, but Northampton has dorms. I don’t want to live at home for another 2 years. I did apply to Hampton, I am just waiting for their decision. I wouldn’t mind going to Altoona since I would transfer to the main campus or possibly the University of Maryland in two years. Plus, I received $14,000 in university scholarships to attend.

Is that scholarship for Northampton CC, or is it for U of MD?

U of MD will not hold a scholarship for you for two years. If you do not accept it now, you will lose it, and the chance of getting a similar scholarship two years from now is just about zip. Read through their website to find out about transfer aid.

@Happymomof1 It’s actually for Penn State-Altoona. My mistake for making my post so cryptic.

With that scholarship can you afford Penn State-Altoona? If so, why don’t you just start there. Your transfer chances will probably be the same from there as from the CC, and if your transfer application to UMD should prove to be unsuccessful, you would have the option of completing your degree in Altoona or transfering to University Park.

If you went to Delco, could you get a Campus Apartment in University City? Parking can be difficult, but the neighborhood is fantastic. (I live in it…not the reason it’s fantastic, of course.)

Still rooting for you. Stay warm.
