Is this a good enough "hook"

i know some ppl who are major star athletes and they get into HYPS even if they're not scintillating in academics.

what about hosting your own tv show (provincially viewed) for a year and a half? Put on Music Videos.

is it a good enough hook?

Better off if you’re an athlete, famous actor yourself, or kid of a multi-millionaire.

i donno im not liek FAMOUS famous.. but just like in the korean community in my province people recognize me and stuff… should i even send colleges samples of an episode or would they just get aannoyed that im sendign in so muc hstuff

So this show is from Korea, right? Supplemental stuff is good, but if it’s going to be in Korean, then would there be a point? I would personally strongly focus on that aspect in the application, but not send the actual show unless they gave me specific information to do so.

Nope i speak in english, i just put on Korean music videos.

What do you mean by “put on”? You dance in them, film them, or do you sing in them? Could you elaborate?

as in i introduce the show, artist, title, etc
then give show them the music video i ranted about

then i introduce another artist & a song and show them the music vdieo, etc etc

liek a Video jockey

A hook generally refers to underrepresented minority status, athlete, legacy or developmental admit. Yours is more of a unique and interesting extra curricular. It probably would be very noticeable. How much it would enhance your chances? Who knows. Good luck nonetheless.

Here’s a couple of ways to “position” your video hosting -

First of all, it’s a job, which you can use to show that you’re responsible -
You had to show up, be organized, pick the videos (did you make up your own comments? If so then you can talk about that).

At a minimum, this is something you could write about as an EC.

If you are applying to schools for some sort of communication/journalism/media program, then you can show that you’ve already got some experience, and then demo videos start making sense.

Think creatively about how it might be relevant.

Good luck!

A hook does NOT refer to URM status and only rarely refers to legacy status. A hook is something that makes the school want you so badly that they are hoping you have the credentials to succeed there. Hooks come in variousl strengths. Being a recruited athlete is certainly one of the strongest hooks, as is being a developmental applicant (one who has, or whose parents have, enough money to make a substantial donation). Other hooks can be playing a fairly rare instrument well if the orchestra, symphony, etc. is graduating one or more others who play that instrument, being famous, being a novelist, winning very prestigious competitions, and the like.

Most of what people on here call “hooks” are really “tips.” All things being equal, a tip simply gets you selected over similarly qualified individuals. A tip can be any number of things, but I would think having your own TV show would qualify, and I do believe you should send a quick clip to admissions unless they specifically say they don’t want to see such things.

^There goes Tarhunt with his well-crafted definitions :)

woww thanks for the great answers!
