(this would be for the common app prompt, “Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.”)
i’ve done technical theater every year of high school, and i want to pursue either theater or film. in my essay, i want to write about how i don’t consider myself a leader in the traditional sense, but rather someone who leads from “behind the scenes” (literally and figuratively). i’ve always hated the notion that every single person needs to be a leader, because not everyone can be in charge in the real world - some people have to follow, and some need to lead from behind the scenes.
would this be a good essay topic? i’m afraid of kind of insulting the fact that college look for students with ~great leadership skills~ but i feel like it should also make me stand out? so yeah, what do you think?
I like the topic. Not sure it really connects with the prompt, but it sounds interesting and somewhat unusual.
Hello, there!
There is an “or” there, which means you can elaborate on any one of it or all of them, depending on what you choose to do.
You are “interested” in technical theater, which means you can base your entire essay on your interest and talk about how it keeps you motivated. You can perhaps mention an incident that reaffirms your “talent” when it comes to theater. You can write about how theater shaped your “identity” or perhaps a little “background” on what led you to take up theater and why you love it so much. Such essay topics get you thinking, don’t they?
I totally agree with you on not everyone having to lead. I appreciate the fact that you’re so much in touch with reality
Kudos! You’re perhaps the kind of person who would rather be a kingmaker than a king
There are people out there who appreciate honesty and there is a good chance that you’d stand out given your perspective and maturity.
I hope this helps. All the very best!
Cheers!
