is this a good essay topic?

i'm applying early to villanova and its supplemental app has the essay question: Please detail a time in your life when you have been transformed. i'm planning to write about friendship and how my view on what makes a good friend has changed over the course of my high school years. Basically I'll talk about how my high school was notorious for drugs/alcohol and so going into freshman year I wanted to be friends with only 'good' kids. But eventually I realized that 'good' kids can be terrible friends and that a true friend not only cares about/respects you, but cares/respects himself. I would close positively by saying I am looking forward to the college experience not only to grow academically, but to grow as a person and make life-long friends. How does this idea sound?

Also, are you allowed to send the same essay for the supplemental app and the common app? Or do colleges require 2 essays?

I think it is a good idea, most colleges dont want bookworms who just study all the time, they want people who are involved with the community and people.

any more thoughts?

As long as you don't say you preferred hanging out with the "bad" kids. I guess your point is that "good" kids are not necessarily "good friends"?? Focus on the change in you --not just on the qualities of the friends. Two different essays is a better idea--one on friendship one with a more academic or career-oriented slant?
