Hey guys, my uncle went to Columbia for undergrad and did well, moving on to Harvard for grad school. Would this actually help me get into Columbia?

To have a good hook, must it be your parents or good friends in an admissions office? I am trying to boost my resume, focusing on my passions, but a good hook is hard to come by! Please help me out!!

that doesn’t count as a legacy, and it doesn’t reflect on anything YOU did, or any aspect of who YOU are. try again.

Thanks for the info; I really had no idea if it was good or not. I agree that it did not reflect on anything I have done or yet to complete. However, my uncle and I are very much the same person, as I am interested in the same topics that he studied. (excuse me for my previous post being so spartan in detail)

i think a hook is more like, something about you that is exceptional and will definitely benefit the school. something that goes beyond academics or whatever.

What about personal inventions? Interest in medical procedures (observing one)? What is a good hook?

Sure, inventions are a good way to convey the promise of future success and intellectual potential. Do you have patent applications? Documentation from businesses? Any inquiries made with an IP law firm? Or anything that you can use to substantiate the notion that you have made inventions that are of material use to mankind, and are not obvious from prior art?

That is my work this summer, along with volunteering and a part-time job. I am trying to work with a slightly new company close to me that takes care of all the patenting process, but they get to keep 90% of the profits. Oh well, if it means getting into a good school it seems worth it! Thanks for your help Denzera! BTW, why can you not believe me when I say that I can dunk on a 10’ net-let’s settle this with a game of one-on-one!! LOL

no way, i’ve got an inch on you but I can’t shoot a J even if you made the hoop a laundry basket. :)

Let’s make a deal… make a quick video of your 5’11" ass dunking on a 10’ net and then holding up a sign that says “I just clowned Denzera”, and upload it to youtube or something, and i’ll do some detailed editing of a draft of a college essay for you.

In short, no. If your mom or dad went to Columbia, and you had a solid application all around, perhaps. The point of legacy admits is supposed to solidify dedication to the school, which in turn ups the chances that parents will donate $$$ to the school. But your uncle? No, they’re not going to care, unless your uncle is someone famous with big bucks to donate to Columbia.

^
I want to see the dunk.

Hey, I don’t know how to upload stuff to youtube (also have a terrible camera) so that would not work. Denzera, your proposition sure sounds good, but just take my word from it. Heck, I playe against a 5’ 6’’ point guard several months ago that could dunk. My brother recorded some of my dunks on his old phone… I realize that it does not help out the cause. I was just trying to descrbe my athletic ability. Thanks for the input though!!!
