My uncle went to Harvard for medical school and stayed for his residency as well, where he became Chief Resident Advisor. Is this a legit. hook or no? Let me know what you think!!!

Not a hook. HMS is a separate entity from Harvard College.

Thanks for the info.! Looks like I am in the cold when it comes to any hook at Harvard then!!! But if he did go to Harvard College, would I have a good hook then?

From what I’ve heard, a legacy at Harvard doesn’t mean as much as at other schools. Now, it still is pretty important, but it’s not the biggest hook you can have.

My friend got a Harvard professor to write her recommendation, yet she still got waitlisted.

Thanks for your hlp Peytoncline, that is useful info. for me. And XX55XX, I feel bad for your friend. What more could she have done, get Harvard’s president to write the recommendation for her! LOL

I got a Harvard alum to write me an additional rec letter, but I was rejected. I think hooks have less of a meaning to Harvard (unless, of course, you donate a large sum of money, which really can be applied to virtually any top tier school).

Legacy as a hook works, but just because one of your parents went to Harvard doesn’t make you a legacy. I guess technically it might, but your going up against REAL legacaies who have like both parents, an uncle, and their grandparents who went. Plenty of people have one parent who went to Harvard.

Yeah I know about the entire families of Harvard alumni. That’s not fair for the rest of us!!!LOL I was just wondering if my admission chance was increased by like .01% if I had a legit. legacy. Thanks!

Being a legacy (not Harvard med legacy) probably doubles your chances - but 7% to 14% still isn’t great odds! I’m not sure that being a double legacy makes any difference. My niece who had great grades, was third in her class, went to Nationals on an academic team, and ran a business still got turned down. She was a double legacy and had a grandparent who attended Harvard as well.

mathmom, I’m sorry to hear about your niece. It sems nealry impossible to try to target any way to get into these top schools. I know that I should be myself, but it seems that this is still not god enough! Thank you for your input!

Having an uncle who attended does not make you a legacy, even if he attended the College.
