I am currently an out of state student at a fairly respected engineering school on the east coast. The school is ok, but not very challenging in my opinion (we are forced to learn alot of irrelevant stuff). I have made alot of friends and fit in fairly well on campus, but when it comes to the environment/culture around here I feel like I am in a time machine. Everything is so backwards. I have given the culture shock almost a year to set in, and I just can't get over it. As much as I will miss my friends here, I think it might be time to move on. I don't want to live anywhere near this area after college.

Because of this and a few other reasons (traveling back and forth is getting expensive and kind of sucks) I am considering transferring back to my home state. The school there is almost as good (slightly better in some engineering fields). I still haven't visited the engineering facilities and looked deeply into the school, but I thought up an idea that might work.

My plan is to pick my classes at my current school for next year (just in case I decide to stay), and also apply as a transfer student to the school in my home state. Then over summer I plan to visit this school and decide if it is right for me.

Is this a good idea? I feel like I need to make up my mind soon because the engineering programs have different curriculum's, and I will get behind my peers.

Also, I was accepted to the school in my home state when I first applied to colleges. Do I still have to pay the testing people to send my SAT/ACT scores to them again? Do they keep my old info on file?

I am currently a freshman with a 4.0 GPA after one semester, and it should be around a 3.5-3.6 after this semester (I have a class where the test averages are always around 50% and the teacher refuses to curve), so I think I should be accepted as a transfer.

Does anyone have an tips/insight into this situation?
