Dear Financial Aid Appeals Committee:
My name is XXX, and I am writing to ask you to reconsider your office’s decision to suspend my financial aid for the 2018-19 and upcoming 2019-20 school years. My financial aid was suspended due to my low GPA and I am aware that it was the cause of my suspension.
I have faced a number of challenges in meeting my own goals for progress as a student. There were two major issues that affected my ability to be successful here at X. Early fall 2017 XXX, I was diagnosed with adult depression and alcohol use disorder which had a regrettable impact on my ability to successfully attend classes and focus on my coursework.
As the academic year progressed into the spring my condition just worsened, I began to have multiple seizures and blackouts. These withdrawal effects forced me to take the fall 2018 semester off and seek medical help.
As you can imagine, my illness strongly inhibited my ability to be successful in all my classes and fulfill my academic obligation for the fall 2017 semester.
I have been receiving addiction treatment and therapy, and am confident I can continue with my studies as originally intended and continue to improve my overall academic progress as well. I plan to re-register and repeat the classes that I failed in due to my disease. I would be honored to continue my studies at XXX. I understand the seriousness of the situation that I have put myself into and federal aid is a privilege, not a right. I take full responsibility for my actions and will not allow myself to have another mishap in the future. Thankfully, I have come up with a plan that will make sure that I stay on the right track and become a successful student.
I have enclosed a copy of all my medical records relative to my medical condition as well as copies of my discharge forms.
Thank you very much for your consideration and time. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely, XXX
