So I love to write, and I'm pretty sure that I want to pursue it in college. Right now I'm leaning towards journalism... I never joined our school newspaper because it's a joke... only 2 issues a year and the level of writing is very rudimentary.

I landed an internship here at a local paper for the summer. It isn't the Orlando Sentinel, but it's pretty big. I would guess it has a pretty big circulation... second biggest paper here. Anyway, that's not the point.

The guy I'm talking to said that they wanted a high school kid to write a column during the school year, and made it sound that as long as they like me during the summer, that will most likely be me.

Do you think this will be a good... I hate saying this term... hook? I mean I have other stuff, but I think this is pretty cool.

Oh, and what schools in boston have a great english/journalism program? I'm in love with Boston University at the moment... But any other suggestions would be cool too :).

Yes, what you're going to be doing is excellent. Make sure that you do some research when you write your columns. That's what makes columns stand out and seem very professional. Don't just write about your gut feelings.

For instance, if you decide to do a column on your opinion about the quest to have Fla. students declare majors in high school, take the time to interview some experts about this subject. This could include college professors with research expertise in this. It also could include talking to people who were educated in countries with similar systems.

And if you can find a way to do some hard news articles, that would be a big plus, too.

Emerson in Boston is known for having an excellent communication program.

I wouldn't call what you're doing a hook because a fair number of the top high school aspiring journalists do similar things, but it is a good way to spend your summer and it would demonstrate to the colleges that you're serious about journalism as a career.

I don't think it's a hook really, but its a great EC.
