Is this a good way to find out if I like accounting?

I'm going into my sophomore year this fall and have decided to change majors. Accounting isn't something that caught my eye until recently. (I was previously a science major)

If I take a course titled "Financial Accounting" (first course many accounting majors take at my school), will this course give me a good idea of what accounting will be about?

Will it guide me to a definite "yes" or "no" with regards to whether or not accounting is for me?

I wouldn’t say that it would give you a definitive answer as to whether it will suit you or not. It will provide some guidance in the right direction, but intro classes in any major aren’t necessarily involved enough to give anyone sufficient substance to judge their interest. By the time you are in the Intermediate Accounting classes, you should have a good feel for Accounting, but that might take three semesters to get to. If you like your principles classes, there’s a good chance you’d like the major, but I wouldn’t venture to suggest it’s a given.

You won’t like it, but it is a very useful skill to have. I know very few people that actually like it. Probably 1/500. Most people choose it because it is a safe job that is lucrative to the general population (Excluding doctors, lawyers, management consultants, or high finance).

Trent, no one ever knows for sure what one will like. I was always good with numbers and excelled in college in accounting. At work, some thing I enjoyed, such as getting put on special projects. But in general, I found the work to be tedious because it lacked intellectual stimulation. Even after a number of years going back to get a masters degree in tax, I found the same: good at school, tedious at work. It did however eventually lead me to a job in software quality assurance which I enjoy. So the long and short of it is that taking Financial Accounting will not give you a definite yes. It may however give you a definite no.

But really the greater question you need to answer is what really gets your juices flowing.
