Is this a hook?

My mom never went to high school, but my dad has a master's degree (that he got after moving here from China when he was 40, learning English while he was studying for his master's, and still earning it in 4 years).

They're both first generation here, but I was wondering if my mom's lack of college, and even high school education, would constitute me as a first generation college student even if my dad has a master's degree?

No. Since your dad has a master’s degree, you’re automatically considered “second generation” college student. First generation, as implied, means that the student is the first person in his/her immediate family to attend college.

First Gen is not a hook anyway. It is barely a tip.
