would being from North Dakota be considered a hook at Wesleyan? if so how much of a hook?

YES. It will be a huge help. There is currently only one North Dakotan student in the entire school. Wesleyan is really conscious of the need for geographic diversity, i.e., finding students from outside the northeast and California. They really want to say "We have students from all 50 states and X countries." I think South Dakota is the missing link, but ND will be a big help too.

thanks, that makes me feel a little bit more confident. I live in a very rural, low income area of ND. Also i attend a very poor high school only like 50% of the students attend a 4 year college and the average ACT is only 17! I'm applying next year, but the only thing hurting me is my class rank, top 25%(messed up freshmen year). Do I have no chance because of my rank. I got a 30 on my ACT and my EC's are pretty good.

bumb...................

yeah you have a really good shot- strong ACTs. don't hesitate to retake them again; mine went up 2 points (which is fairly significant)

just thrive in your ECs and make sure you have a strong essay and strong recs- get to know two of your teachers very well!!!

thank you, i will take that advise.

and what about Georgia?

and california? please let it be at least somewhat of a hook

there are a bunch of kids from atlanta and la. norcal too.

anyway, it's still better than being from nyc or a boston suburb.

Norcal? So my living there would NOT be an advantage? crap...

hey, just remember your geography is never a disadvantage! maybe not an advantage, but it isn't used against you

haha, of course. i'm just looking for reasons to uppp my slim transfer chances and calm my worries....

Being from the south helps a little bit. California is not underrepresented at all though.

The point is that the school (esp. under Michael Roth) is trying to establish itself as a formidable educational institution in areas where it maybe hasn't been considered as such in the past. In the northeast and in urban areas on the west coast it's not a problem for them. I doubt the situation in LA and the SF Bay area is much different than in NYC or Boston.

okay thank you, but being from norcal isn't necessarily a disadvantage right? like i'm not going to lose points because of that?

How about Brunei? As an international needing aid..
