I'm pretty into the NBA. I'm a Lakers fan, and have over 10,000 posts on a forum. I've also started writing amateur articles on another site.

So... Can I put that on my resume?

wow I’m in the exact same dilemma as the OP. I have been a prolific contributor of commentaries and translated (originally in English) commentaries for a Chinese basketball website (commercial site) since 8th grade. And I have recently been named as a moderator.
It may sound, as the OP said, laughable. But it’s indeed a very time-consuming task, I’ve been spending, on average, 2 1/2 hours on that site while managing to maintain my grades. My friends (academic and basketball ppl) think that’s an awesome job, whereas my mom disparages it every time I turn on my computer.
Now CC’ers. We (both the OP and I) want your opinions. Any input is greatly appreciated.

If I were an employer, I’d think that it’s an obsessive hobby – not anything that could reflect on how you could contribute to my company. I gather adm officers might feel the same. Just because it’s time consuming and both of you obviously enjoy it – doesn’t convey value to a potential student community at a top college, IMHO.

I would put it on an application if you are a moderator and have responsibilities that are normally reserved for adults.

Writing articles and moderating a website sound substantive. Posting on a forum? Half the regulars on CC would be able to claim it as an EC.

I have nearly 25k posts on a forum I used to admin, but I did not include it in my app because I felt it would not show the college what I had to offer. Your online contributions do not contribute to the college community, and even though you enjoy it, I believe things like that are best left off the app.

If you’re worried, do an essay about how your hobby makes you a better person or gives you positive attributes.

Pfft. 90% of adcoms/employers would reject you for being a Lakers fan.

If you’re hesitating, it’s pretty obvious it isn’t a particularly impressive feat. Think how you would react if you’re doing the admission/hiring. Would anybody hire you because you post obsessively on a website? Hell, how many employers actually like to have web-obsessed employees? “Hey, this person spends 3 hours a day on just this website! That’s shows motivation, and I’m 100% sure this person will never spend any time during work on this stuff. ONE HUNDRED PERCENT!”. And I highly doubt adcoms will be any more… “impressed”.

^
I see.

I think I’ll stick to writing articles. My first one got 400 views.
