Is this a legit reason to go to office hours?

One of my professors is a really cool guy and I like talking with him. Is it legit to go to office hours just to chat? I don't want to look like a suckup, and I don't want to interfere with students who actually have questions.

um…what the hell? no that’s not legit

ask him on a date

If you chat with him about the subject of the class, it’s completely legit. Why not ask him for a job if you really like him?

If it’s something that you thought of in class, was mentioned briefly in class, etc., it should be fine.

to counter what everyone else is saying: yes it’s perfectly legit, as long as you don’t get in the way of other students with more pertinent questions. Office hours is time set aside by the professor to interact with students–if there’s no one else there he wasn’t going to do anything better anyway so you might as well chat with the professor if you’d like to.

I’ve heard about kids who weren’t even taking this economics class that went to the professor’s office hours and ended up chatting with him about what flavor of ice cream economics would be.

I go to my professors’ office hours all the time just to chat! It’s legit.

Its totally legit as long as you leave as soon as another student shows up. If he’s cool like you say, he’s probably used to students showing up to chat.

Perfectly legit, as long as you keep an eye on the clock and leave if any students with real questions show up for help.

I drop by some of my favorite professors’ offices to chat all the times. It’s perfectly fine.

It really depends. I am quite friendly with my professors, but I would probably only chat as a side thing if I had something to occupy the professor’s time with. Because really, the office hours are meant to answer questions.

I’ve heard more about my humanities friends’ professors chatting than about my own (math) professors’ doing so.

Whenever I do this, I keep things short. I just pass by and tell the professor just that. Something like “Just passing by and wanted to saw hi.”

Of course, it’s nice if you have more things to add to that like “the last lecture was interesting,” “I saw/read something related to your lecture,” or ask some short question about the course material that you may already know (something) about, but don’t ask about something that everybody should know because you may come across as dumb. Don’t overdo either, though.

It’s also nice if you ask the professor if they will be open for office hours on a certain day so that they can sort of expect you.

Overall, just keep things short and spread the meetings around. You don’t want to send the wrong signals…

I always go to office hours because I want to chat with a professor I like. All you have to do is to make up a ******** question about some homework.
