Dear XXX,
Greetings from Notre Dame! I have reviewed your application and have been very impressed. However, before we can make a final decision, I was wondering if you could send me some more information. (deleted: they were asking me about my FA)

Thank you for your assistance! We are very interested in you and I hope to hear back from you soon!

All the best,
(name)

I think this is similar to a likely letter or something, but I dont know. what do u guys think?

Secondly, I was just wondering how liberal the student body and staff/administration was at Notre Dame considering it has a catholic affiliation? Princeton review says that it has "little class or race interaction", is that true?

It's a request for Financial Aid information. Anyone who hasn't sent in their info gets that letter.

As for how liberal the school is, I always thought it was a 50/50 mix personally. There isn't as much diversity as at some schools (being in Northern Indiana doesn't help, it isn't for lack of effort) and I did notice that people tended to hang out with others of their own race in the dining hall. That doesn't mean that a mix never happened, or that there was exclusivity, that is just what I observed. I don't know that it is necessarily a bad thing, however, it didn't seem uncomfortable to me. Just my $.02

while I was there I saw people talking to people of a different ethnicity than themselves. Whenever I asked someone about it, they said that those who segregate themselves are the only ones who have a problem. If you make the effort to talk to different people, you will not be turned away. & I thought it would be completely conservation---let me tell you, it is NOT lol. But if you want to be conservative, you can. The overall feeling was that you could choose who you wanted to talk to, worship, and hang around, and they will accept you.

conservative*, not conservation lol

It's pretty darn conservative if you are from a blue state. I am of the opinion that that is a Good Thing. One of the great things about college is that you go out into the world and find out that not everybody thinks like you do. I am happy that DD is having her beliefs and assumptions challenged. She's had to reexamine her assumptions and justify her positions and argue about them and the net effect is that she's grown tremendously as a person.

Oh no! I got a letter requesting more Financial Aid info but they didn't say that they were "very impressed" and "very interested." =(
Does that mean that I am "very" out of luck?
Because then I will be "very" sad.

let's put it this way, i'm just hoping it is more conservative than my current state of CA

i'm pretty confident that will be achieved

Very interesting letter that reads like a likely letter. Was the letter signed by the financial aid officer or the Dean of Admissions?

it was signed by the admission counselor

Sounds very promising. What are your stats, may I ask?

I don't know if this means anything but here is my story --
My oldest son applied to Notre dame last year - We filled out all of the financial forms online and that was it - no further request was made to us to provide additional information. He was waitlisted and then was accepted at the end of May. That was when the University asked for the additional financial information.
Now this year - my second oldest son(I have 5 boys, 2 girls!) applied to Notre Dame - and once again, we fillled out all of the information online - and just today, he received a letter from the Financial Aid Office asking for more detailed information.
Any thoughts??
His stats are as follows:
SATs 1540 (2230)
ACTs 34
GPA 4.61 (W)
3.87 (UW)
Rank School doesn't rank but I would guess top 3-4% of his class(class
size is about 700 - school size is 2700.
National Merit Finalist, National Honor Society, Cum Laude Society, AP Scholar
ECs Captain for Track and Cross Country teams, MVP Cross Country last
3 years, etc and has won many academic awards and leadership
positions

Last year, letters were sent out on Thursday, March 29th and my son received his letter on Saturday, March 31st(lives in Illinois).

My son received the same letter in early March, 2006, and his acceptance letter on April 1st. Some searching of this forum and others led me to contacting three other prospective students who received the same FinAid letter, and all were admitted.

Obviously, it's no guarantee, but I think it's good news. Good luck!

Tony

Does that mean if your letter is not signed and is completely impersonal then you are probably not admitted? I never received that kind of letter, just an application is complete one. Is that bad?

Luke2329 -

I wouldn't read anything into it -- these anxious days of waiting cause us to play mind games with ourselves...

What did your letter say, though? My son's letter asked for more detailed financial info than what was asked for online -- I was just wondering why they would want this information if he wasn't going to be accepted but who knows? I am probably reading too much into the letter and maybe it is just a routine procedure. But you stated that your letter was impersonal - how did they conclude it - What did they write?

Well that's the thing, I never received a financial letter. Maybe because I submitted all my materials on time? But the letter that was impersonal was the one that told me my application was complete. It wasn't signed and was just very generic. I think you're right though, I am becoming anxious. I wonder why the school would ask for more financial aid info though? Do the tell that to ALL admitted students or just ones that didn't submit something originally?

Luke2329-

My son did submit everything on time - the application form, the FAFSA forms and the CSS Profile form - this letter was asking for more detailed financial info - but once again, we are only going to drive ourselves crazy if we keep overanalyzing everything. I hope that you can relax during the next 3 weeks-
and I wish you the best of luck with everything!

i know they'll send more financial info requests cause they want your tax forms and stuff.

i tihnk

That's probably true kwantran, I submitted those tax forms without them asking. Thanks Heycow, I wish your son the best of luck too.
