So I plan on going to law school eventually and hopefully becoming an IP lawyer. I live in Miami, approximately 5 minutes away from FIU, and I'm about to finish my senior year in High School.

I know (or at least think) that law schools not only care about your GPA in college, but also what school you come from.

I plan on going to FIU for my first two years (It's not the best school in FL, but I'd be saving SO much money), and then transferring to a better undergrad school, maybe out of state. Once I finish my Bachelor's Degree in the new school I transferred into, I'd apply for law school.

Are there any negative effect I may have overlooked?

Long story short: is it normal to begin first two years at one school, then transfer to another and finish there? And then apply to law school?
Thanks.

Law schools don’t really care about where you went to undergrad as long as it’s a decent school which FIU is. Your GPA and LSAT scores and LORs are what will matter.

The idea of transferring later would only be ok if your parents are willing to pay the high costs of going OOS. Would they be? If not, then it won’t likely be affordable. Transfer students don’t usually get the best aid.

Tell us more about your situation. Test scores, GPA, low income? middle income? high income?

How much will your parents pay each year for college?

If you qualify for Bright Futures, and you get enough aid, then UF or FSU would be an option as well.

Also, with the right stats and situation, going OOS from the beginning may be affordable.

ACT: 28
SAT: 1740
GPA: Weighted=4.3 Unweighted=3.3
Low income family (expected contribution=$0)
We don’t have the pre-paid plan which covers tuition
My parents would have to pay about $7,000 each year, but prices are never fixed and they can go up next year.
I have the highest Bright Futures Scholarship which, as of this year, pays $100 per credit hour.

They’d be expected to pay that much for which school??? And, am I correct in guessing that they can’t contribute anything?

You should retest to get your M+CR as high as possible. Also take the ACT. Get the fee waivers from your GC.

If you can get your M+CR to a better number, then there may be some FL publics that will give you some merit money. If so, then with the merit money, a Pell Grant, Bright Futures, etc, you might be able to go to another FL school.

Are you a first gen student? IF so, then UF has a generous program that you might qualify for.

Your idea about transferring later is unlikely because you wouldn’t likely get that great of aid as a transfer. Then you’d be stuck.

Transfer students don’t get good financial aid? How bad is it?
That’s a shame… I guess I’ll have to take on some debt. I really don’t want to finish my 4 years at FIU. It’s just not as prestigious as FSU.
