Is this a no-no?

For a supplement to college X, I am elaborating on a piece of advice given to me by a former nun: "Go to college, drink a few beers, and decide how to change the world." Yes, it was a former nun.

Clearly the point of the message isn't the alcohol, and the reasons for why she said what she said are clearly explained in the essay. So, 94% of me says it's okay to use this quote. But 6% of me is wondering, is there some kind of unspoken rule against references to alcohol in essays? I don't want to shoot myself in the foot or anything. I also don't want to misquote her, because I remember clearly what she said. Thoughts?

Oh and I figured this could belong in the essay section, but it’s really more of a general question about references to alcohol than a specific one about essays. So I took a shot here. I apologize to mods if it should have gone elsewhere.

Hmm well I’m not an expert, but I would say as long as you argued your point well, than that’s what they are going to care about. They’re looking more at your ability to write a good essay, your thoughts, and you as a person. I personally think it’s a great quote to use if you utilized it well.

Well, many of the older students in college are of drinking age…

IMO, unless the emphasis of the essay is on alcohol in college, I don’t really see it as an inflammatory or unacceptable reference.

Good luck! Sounds like it’s going to be an interesting read. Eye-catching, definitely.

sounds okay to me too!

As long as you fully express yourself as a person and demonstrate to the admissions that this quote really did have an impact, you should be fine unless you’re applying to a strict Christian School
