Is this a profitable major?

I'm very interested in communications and international affairs. I've traveled and studied abroad, and also have been involved in a variety of multimedia projects. I am planning to attend a DC school (that is if I get accepted) and major in mass communications and minor in international relations, or double major. Would this be a very profitable major and offer a variety of jobs? I'm shooting for having a wide variety of job options open to me (I know, I know the job market is extremely competitive right now) but still be able to do what I love, because right now I can't imagine doing anything other than those fields right now. Does anybody have any suggestions or experience?

These are not “sure thing” majors like engineering, accounting, nursing and pharmacy. Not that I’m encouraging sure things. It will just depend what you do wirh them. Communications jobs are highly competitive and not typically highnpaying, yet there are those who’ve made fortunes and who do very well in jobs in this field.

You will need to differentiate yourself from the masses to do very well. Think about becoming fluent in a couplebof languages. Knowing Arabic, Chinese or Spanish would be
of interest to employers today.

^ I agree with 2college (except for the Spanish - there are plenty of spanish speakers in the US)

Even “sure thing” majors are only sure things for entry-level jobs. You’ll want to look into internships, networking, and graduate programs to enhance your marketability in this or any other major.

Erin’sdad, I wasn’t necessarily talking about working in the US. This generation needs to think globally. Wish I’d taken Spanish, there are great business opportunities now in South America, where I’m about to move.

Thanks for the info, I am trying to learn Spanish right now and I think once I master that I will definitely look into learning another language. I agree with you about ur generation needing to think globally.

Do you think it would be worth while in declaring a double major in these areas? Or is that too much effort with little results?

I meant that speaking Spanish is not a differentiator among US college graduates like speaking Chinese or Farsi.

OP, declaring a double major in two languages or a language and a field like accounting?

I mean majoring in bother international affairs and communications, because I know that the job types fields of study are different for these areas, and that international affairs requires you to learn another language or at least take a language course I’m pretty sure…
