Is this a reasonable freshman/sophmore schedule?

I am a senior and I working on deciding courses for next year (I am really excited about college). I am majoring in biochemistry with plans of attending pharmacy school. I love the chem and the biology but I am not great at math (currently in pre-cal) so I am going to take another year of pre-cal to improve my chance of making a good grad in Calc. I'm not a CC genius (1800 SAT and 3.6 gpa) so I am not taking a huge course load or jumping head first into extremely difficult classes.

I have taken bio I and II, Chem I, and Intro Soc through dual enrollment at my local CC (which I have 4.0 with 25 credits). I feel confident in my eco/evo biology but less so in my cell/molecular biology so I want to retake my Bio II and I want a firmer foundation in my Chm I.

I guess I am mainly worried because all of the "screwed up freshman year" threads.

Congrats on getting into NCSU. =)

I highly encourage you not to take CH 221 without CH 201. My understanding is that the last topics of CH 201 are an intro to Organic Chemistry. It does you no good to try to “get to the real stuff” without the proper background.

It is my understanding you are not required to take any more foreign language for your degree, and waiting a year and a semester to take it, plus making it your 18th hour, seems a little extreme.

12 hours seems low for your first semester, and although it’s full-time enrollment for a community college, I’m not sure if it constitutes full-time enrollment at NCSU, which might affect your financial aid. You could at least work on your PE/Health requirement by taking a 13th or 14th hour. =/

Other than that, just make sure you’ve confirmed with an advisor which GEP requirements you’ve met–and good luck =)

Also, if you’re looking to get a PharmD, you can apply directly to many programs after obtaining the prerequisite courses, which can be done in 2 years.

Unless you really think you’re going to benefit from redoing the same stuff you did before some more, I would recommend going right into Calc. And I doubt that’s you unless you’re struggling to just pass Pre-Calc right now. I retook a class and didn’t do any better (well, not enough that it was worthwhile). I especially don’t think you should retake 2 semesters of Pre-Calc.

Also, since I’m assuming you need to be through differential equations for a lot of the higher Chem classes, you’ll probably run into scheduling problems when you try to schedule some Chem classes which require it.

Thanks, for the comments! However in the past couple hours I’ve completely redid this schedule, lol.

@aigiqinf:

I don’t know why but the way it is setup at NCSU is that sequence of Chemistry but I can see if I can work around it. I want to have a degree before going to a pharmacy school, just incase pharmacy school does not work out.

@QwertyKey:

I have a C (77) in my pre-calc right now and will probably not get much higher and I got a 520 on my SAT. I really think I’ll benefit from the extra math classes. Since calculus is a pre-req I really need to make a good grade in it. None of the Chem classes require Calc til physical chemistry, besides I can use them as my free electives.

Here is the new schedule I’ve been working on, though of course it all depends if I can get into the class before it fills, class times, etc.

THANKS!! Let me know where you think I could make changes. : )

Just chiming in here; I highly doubt that exact schedule will be available. Classes get full, are only offered at certain times, etc. Don’t plan out the next four years already.

Nonetheless, having a general idea is a good thing.

I know none of it is set in stone, but I like to plan and it is fun. : )

I’m assuming you met your history requirement in high school…but I don’t see anything that meets the literature requirement.

I see your biochem does have CH 201 after 223…I would definitely ask about that. 0.o

Well I may be wrong but I didn’t think there was history or literature requirement but a Humanities and Social Science requirement(6 credits each), you can take history or lit for those requirements but you can also choose something elses.

[General Education Program (GEP) 2009](<a href=“Undergraduate Courses, Curricula, and Academic Standards”>Undergraduate Courses, Curricula, and Academic Standards)

https://packtracks.ncsu.edu/scripts/RegRec/adadgbk.pl?curr=BS&dgr_key=11BCH%20%202097%20&title=BIOCHEMISTRY</a></p>

[Curriculum in Biochemistry](<a href=“Undergraduate Courses, Curricula, and Academic Standards”>Undergraduate Courses, Curricula, and Academic Standards)

my humanities would be:
PHI 221 Contemporary Moral Issues
PHI 325 Bio-Medical Ethics

my social science:
SOC 202 Principles of Sociology (taken at CC)
SOC 381 Sociology of Medicine

I don’t think you need to take 6 credits of pre-calc, even if you only have a 520 SAT and a C in pre-calc right now. Is there an accelerated class that you could take? Are you not taking any electives at all?

Ya, I was thinking about that there is a a MA 111 which is one semester - pre-cal/trig I may do that fall of freshman then take the calc in the spring.

My free electives (10 cr.) will fulfill my minor: ‘Health, Medicine, and Human Values’ and the extra math class. I wouldn’t be able to get my degree + minor in 4 year otherwise, I still may need to take a summer session or an extra fall semester as it is.

GRK 333 Medical Terminology
MB 411 Medical Microbiology
MA 111 Pre-Calculus/Trig

Two quick thoughts.

1st) You might get a lot more by hiring a tutor for your Calculus class now and getting the concept of Calculus now instead of waiting to see what happens in college.

You get to choose a tutor that fits with your learning style and personality.

Individualized instruction instead of massive 101 lectures.

Better GPA now and going into college knowing you can do it, instead of hoping for the best.

2nd) The first years of college should be a time of exploration and interest discovery.

Retaking classes robs you of your valuable time and energy. It may seem like a safe bet now but it will hold you back and frustrate you as your ready to discover more…

(No matter what the cost of your tutor is today, it will be a lot less expensive that using 1/4 of your first year of college for Pre-Calculus).

I think the MA 111 would be a good idea, especially for someone who is in pre-calc this year. Even if you aren’t shooting the lights out in the class, you’re still learning concepts.

Oh, sorry–I bet I was looking at 37 instead of 97 so I was looking at GER instead of GEP. palmface

Yeah, I’d go with MA 111.

There’s absolutely no reason to be planning this excessively as a senior in high school. Your interests are likely to change many times over once you actually enter college and discover so many new, exciting intellectual pursuits. You’ll get down to bottom of what you truly enjoy, and college academics are an entirely different ballgame.

The problem, Sligh, is that at NCSU you are admitted to a specific college and you are required to take courses that keep you on track to graduate in 4-years with a degree in that major–which can make it difficult to change majors. If the OP wanted to change to chemistry she would have to apply for an inter-college transfer. This is different than most other colleges. One of my friend’s suite-mates wants to be an Aerospace Engineering, but he’s a declared Political Science major, so he hasn’t been able to get the matriculation requirements, without which he can’t transfer.

I for one am an obsessive class scheduler, so I know exactly why the OP is doing it. =)

Many students attend NCSU as undeclared, they even have a good first year college program to explore possible majors.

The OP isn’t in FYC.
