I have a little business online, where I use my artwork to sell prints, pins, stickers, clothing, and more. I’m probably going to put this on my application as work experience, but a friend suggested that I give admissions a 20% off discount code as an extra thing, just to show creativity. Do you think this is an okay idea, or is it too risky?
Also, my store allows creators to make up their own discount codes, so I’d have to think of one too. “college2016” is kinda boring, and “admitme” seems too bold. Any ideas?
risky. But I think your own business is awesome and I’d suggest finding a way to highlight that in interviews or essays. It makes you unique, creative and resourceful. Good for you!
Thanks! Do you think that adding a discount code in the description will be worth the risk of maybe being perceived as weird and overconfident? A discount code for the store might be disregarded, but some of my friends and teachers have told me that it could be funny and creative, so I don’t really know ;v;
(that wasn’t my store’s name, by the way. It’s just a host website. I’m not trying to advertise)
Terrible idea, it is unethical in the extreme. There is no good spin on attempted bribery. If I were an admissions officer, my thought process quickly goes to “If this guy knows he is bribing me and being unethical, then God only knows what lines he would cross in the classroom and elsewhere. If he didn’t realize this is unethical, then do we really want a student that has such an undeveloped sense of right and wrong?”. Don’t do it.

Ah, I hadn’t thought of it that way. Attempted bribery does look terrible. I don’t have any bad intentions though. I just give discount codes to many people I know, so people suggested using this as a strategy.
I definitely won’t do it (and maybe I should learn to think more critically of myself). Thank you for the perspective!
