Is this a suitcase school?

My D likes TCNJ but is concerned about the suitcase school thing. We are in Long Island so she would not be going home most weekends, and is concerned because she hears over and over that the campus somewhat empties out on weekends. Does a current student know - how true is this? I know this is the case at Stony Brook University (near us) and wondering if it is similar here.

Most people do stay during weekends, but because of the closeness of TCNJ to the NJ/NY area some people do go home, but again the vast majority remain. Stonybrook is a suitcase school partly because many students commute and partly because many just leave on the weekends, there’s no school spirit. TCNJ has very little commuters, and there’s a lot going on on campus.

TCNJ has lots of school spirit and I’d say that on any given weekend at least 70% of students remain, and this helps you get closer with your floormates!

Hope this helped=)

I NEVER go home. My home is approx. 2 hours from TCNJ and i wouldn’t want to miss a weekend here - my friends don’t leave on the weekends either. There is always something going on…yes, there are lots of planned activities like concerts, comedy shows, events in the campus bar but there is also a good social scene at off-campus houses, greek houses, etc. The really great thing about TCNJ is that most of us really love the school! It’s great academically but it also is fun.

see my other threads with my opinion on academics and name recognition…however, I would say that although it is a suitcase school, you can have a great time on campus but only if you are a part of Greek life. it’s weird but once you are in an above average fraternity there is really no lack of women! those who do stay on campus do tend to smoke a lot of weed and drink heavily to forget that they will graduate from a no-name school.

Please disregard centralprkwest, he graduated 11 years ago so he has no idea what the school is like now.

My comments have been hard-hitting and relevant, which is why a rising freshman like bdmet does not like to hear them.

They’ve been annoying and pointless, you’re going to tell me you’re doing “well” if youre bashing future TCNJ students on an online forum? Get out get a life, don’t be bitter and live a life of regrets.

Well I recently received a call from TCNJ about a donation and it was a harsh reminder that TCNJ remains a non-relevant school on a domestic and international level. It made me think, wait…I went to this school virtually for free (I guess you get what you pay for) and now that I’ve had to explain to countless people over the years what TCNJ is I’m going to give a donation?Bdmet I wish you luck at TCNJ—given your career path, as I’ve mentioned, it is irrelevant where you go to school, just do well undergrad, do well on your MCATs and it doesn’t matter if you went to county college. I’m sure you’ll be an exemplary doctor.

Sorry centralprkwest, but it appears that your “hard-hitting and relevant” comments are actually quite irrelevant in the “suitcase school” portion of this forum considering you yourself said you have not visited (much less associated) with the school since your graduation 11 years ago. I would much rather hear the opinions of a current student like bdmet2491 regarding this subject, as opposed to a bitter alumnus who is trying to monopolize this forum with a single thought that could have easily been conveyed in one simple post.

Will be entering as a freshman. And I would add that I am an alumni board member for a greek organization, meaning I am tied into the college community. So yes, what I am saying is relevant and true and it is up to you to decide whether to agree with me now and do the right thing or disagree and regret it later.

Do you mean you are tied to TCNJ’s community or to college community in general? If you have maintained ties to TCNJ then why the negative comments? And I reiterate what I posted on the other thread - it is up to the student, not you, to make the final decision and determine what is right. I respect your opinion and comments but I refuse to believe that your point is the one and only “correct” point.

Posters who digress from the OP’s topic should be penalized with an infraction. Centralprkwest, I’m very sorry if the people above have offended you in any matter, but your comments are worth very little on this board. I am well aware that each poster is entitled to his own opinion, but your argument is incoherent and contradictory. Instead of creating a hopeful outlook for incoming TCNJ students, you have described a rather bleak existence. Your pessimistic perspective on life is superfluous on this forum. Perhaps redirecting you to http://www..com/ would enable you to speak more about your circumstances.
