Is this actually the typical size of a Hill room?

YouTube - Hill College House at Penn

Because I've heard that the beds are "like one foot apart" but the one in the video that they made doesn't look that claustrophobically small.

So is Penn just showing us an abnormally large Hill room, or are they really like that? It seems livable, for me at least.

they ARE like a foot apart.

I physically visited and I must say that I might hit my roommate with my leg while sleeping. Hence, I didn’t apply to Hill XD

The food is restaurant quality. A friend treated me to a meal and it was AMAZING. The service was excellent, the food was great and plentiful and it wasn’t crowded in the dining hall.

The hallways are very depressing though. They are dull, narrow, windowless and give you the impression of prison. The underground is a freaken bomb shelter.

My make-it-break-it was the AC and communal bathrooms. The bathrooms are no worse than those in the high rises (also visited without tour group thanks to this friend) but I don’t like the idea of 2 shower cabins face to face with no physical barrier to someone peeping in. Just sharing…

Hill shared bathrooms are much more disgusting than high rise bathrooms.

haha dang you must have some long legs, there’s no way i could have hit my roommate with my legs back then (in fact, we used to have visiting guests sleep in between us, on top of our dressers that we pulled together)

well maybe I exaggerated a little :P

As for the bathroom comment: the Hill bathroom was really tidy whereas the High Rise was under maintenance (exposed wall panel behind toilet) so my perception might be a little skewed. Also, I saw that the toilet bowls in the high rises are circular rather than oval (gentlemen might understand my implication). However, I image if you switch that, get a new shower curtain and maybe put a little color and personalization into the High Rise bathroom, it might be considerably better than the communal ones.

As for hill: here are the specifics about the bathrooms. (Note: I was visiting the first floor so apologies if some of this doesn’t hold absolute merit)
-Had no window making the space a little more oppressive.
-Had stalls like public bathrooms
-Bathroom cannot be locked (safety hazard) = if you are feeling particularly bad and desire a solitary struggle against your lower intestine (producing sounds and fragrances powerful enough to kill a man), you are at risk of having someone walk in on your epic battle
-Absolutely nothing preventing a particularly curious/drunk/daring member of the opposite gender from learning anatomy (with you as the dummy)
-If you are applying personal care products / grooming / performing a breast cancer exam in front of the mirror, you are in clear line of sight of all hallway occupants with a simple push on the bathroom door.

Also, please consider that you can’t get privacy in neither your sleeping quarters nor your bathroom. If you have a habit you are conscious of, you might be forced to either go public with it or drop it.

generally speaking, all of the problems you noted with hill bathrooms are the same in any communal bathroom here

though quad bathrooms can be locked, everyone who lives in quad has a key… and the same key works everywhere…

hill food restaurant quality? HA! you must’ve visited on a really one-off day… usually, the food is not that stellar

I had 4 plate-fulls and would have gone back for more but my host was giving me odd glances so I decided to control myself. No but seriously: the pasta was great, the Italian sausage was delicious, the pizza was pretty good (not the crust though). From what I sampled, I give Hill a thumbs up (ok it’s no 5-star steak house but lets be fair…)

“-Bathroom cannot be locked (safety hazard) = if you are feeling particularly bad and desire a solitary struggle against your lower intestine (producing sounds and fragrances powerful enough to kill a man), you are at risk of having someone walk in on your epic battle”

LMAO, that was epic! Do you speak from experience?

Hill rooms are small but definitely livable. I lived there my past year, and am so happy that I ended up getting placed there. A lot of the rooms, like mine, open up into a lounge, and that’s where I spent most of my time, so I never found the small room size a problem. You may hear a lot of bad things about Hill, but almost everyone who ends up living there loves it. I certainly did.
