Hey guys! I was recently accepted to Stony Brook University and received a $14,000 based on merit. I was wondering if this is the total aid that I will be receiving from the university itself. I have heard that colleges can give merit based or need based aid. Can I still recieve need based aid? (aside from fafsa/tap)
Did you fill out the Net Price Calculator on Stony’s web site? If so what did it say? What is your FAFSA EFC? Need based aid from the federal gov’t is generally limited to Pell Grant for very low income families (<$6K) and a $5500 loan. SB is a public U and offers limited/no need based aid. That is usually federal or TAP.
Your need based aid would be based on the FAFSA and you TAP eligibility. I don’t think there IS any other need based aid at Stony brook.
What other need based aid did you think there was?
I have recieved a scholarship and am expecting fafsa and tap. I thought that SBU might also provide need based aid after reviwing my FAFSA.
We can’t even begin to help you until you tell us what your FAFSA EFC was. And how much TAP do you qualify for?
FAFSA doesn’t give you money. SBU will award you a need based aid package based on the FAFSA infomation.
My EFC is 0.
If your EFC is $0, you will receive ~$5800 as a Pell grant. You will be allowed to borrow $5500. I don’t know what the NY Tag will give you. The school may also have Perkins loans and SEOG available. It’s unlikely there is additional need based aid at Stony Brook, but they might have an alum scholarship or something available. Check with them, but $14k in grants is already quite generous.
Is this going to be over the cost of 4 years? There is no double dipping. For tuition, tap will subtract the scholarship (especially if it is tuition based from your ward. You cannot receive more than the cost of tuition from TAP, whether it is merit money, a STEM initiative scholarship, etc. You will probably get a SUNY credit to cover most or all of the fees.
With a 0 EFC, you will be eligible for full Pell, a student loan of $5500, and you may need a summer job to cover the room/board and other misc. expenses
Need based aid, at public universities, often consists in what federal aid fafsa calculated you’d get. You I’ll likely get tap in addition to that, and perhaps seog.
SUNY provides an efficient inexpensive degree but they don’t provide much support above that. Right now you could tap into the STEM funding if you are in the top 10% of your class. But I’ve seen that backfire for students so be careful. As usual when it comes to NY, the initiative was knee jerk and not thoughtfully developed. For instance, if you want to change your major out of STEM you have a problem because now you are on the hook for full costs and many students who chose the initiative turned down other scholarships to receive it. They can’t pull those back into the picture when they want to change their major. Further, while engineering provides a clear career pathway, many students realize that majors like biology don’t do that any more than does a major in arcane French Authors (although an administrative position in a university could be in your future if you can be obsequious enough). Only joshing here. The point is that if you are in the top 10% of your graduating class you could attend a SUNY free but be careful about choosing that option if there is any chance you won’t stay in STEM.
It looks like the instate cost of attending Stony Brook is about $20,000 a year. You have gotten $14,000 in grants. You will get $5775 in Pell with a $0 EFC. You can take $5500 in direct loans. Add those to your $14,000 SBU grant, and you exceed the cost of attendance.
I don’t see the problem.
The 14k is most likely going to be given out over a couple of years is probably tied to tuition
How is this different from any other scholarship that is attached to a major (example- engineering); if you are not successful in the major or change majors, you lose the scholarship
With a EFC of $0 you should qualify for full pell ($5775) and full tap($5125?). I’m not 100% sure what the full TAPaward is now but the amount should be close. Is it $14,000 per year or $14,000 for 4 years?
Op will not get tap on top of a merit scholarship that cover tuition. Tap can only be used for tuition and when other scholarships are in the mix cannot exceed the cost of tuition. If it is 14k/year there will be no tap awarded. If it is 14k over 4 years Op will receive TAP up to the cost of tuition
That’s why I ask which is it 14k over 4 years or 14k per year.
In addition to the scholarship (and possibly TAP, if the scholarship amount spans more than a single year), you would also receive Pell ($5775). The financial aid cost of attendance (COA) for SUNY Stony Brook is $24,480 for 2016-2017. The total of all aid for the year (scholarship, TAP, federal loans, federal work study) cannot exceed $24,480.
