Is This An Acceptance?

Dear [insert name meaning "lord of the spear"],

We would like to thank you for your application to and interest in The College of New Jersey. Based on your academic performance and a thorough review of your admissions application, we believe you would be an outstanding TCNJ student.

However, the Psychology major has been inundated with applicants. Unfortunately, TCNJ cannot accommodate the large number of students who wish to major in this department. It would be a disservice to our students to admit everyone into this program, as it would take away from some of the reasons TCNJ excels in higher education: small classes; a high degree of faculty-student interaction; and a complete absence of teaching assistants. Therefore, we will not be considering any other Psychology applications for admission to TCNJ.

However, we would like to offer you an opportunity to select a different academic program. We encourage you to take this change of major seriously by investigating an alternate area of study that you find exciting, challenging, and that you will pursue with great passion while here at TCNJ.

Please select a program from the list of majors that are still available for Fall 2009 students, which can be found at:

Please be sure to include your User ID when filling out the form. You must notify us of your new program as soon as possible, but no later than Wednesday, February 25th.

If you do decide to change your program of study at this time, but your academic passion remains in Psychology, TCNJ offers an internal admissions process. This highly competitive internal process, coordinated through the Psychology department, is open to every current TCNJ student who has completed at least one year of study at TCNJ. Please understand that if you are changing your program of study at this time, there is no guarantee that you will be accepted into the Psychology department once you are enrolled at the college.

We feel it is only fair that someone of your academic standing be made aware of the present situation with our Psychology department. Thank you for your attention to this matter. Best wishes for the remainder of your senior year.

Sincerely,

Lisa Angeloni

Does this basically mean I am accepted as long as I change my major? Also, does this mean that they did still accept some psychology students and I just sent in my application too late to be considered? I have okay stats for TCNJ (top 10%, 2220 sats, good ecs/leadership), so I was just wondering if anyone knew anything about this. Thanks.

I received the same letter, but for the biology dept.
My guidance counselor called the Dean of Admissions personally because as a student in a public NJ school, the guidance dept. knows her personally. Well she said that there were two types of letters sent out: (1) the applicant was re-considered for admission depending on what major he/she chose and (2) the applicant was guaranteed a spot at the college once he/she change his/her major.
Mine, which was identical to your's except for the fact that it was talking about the biology dept. and misc. pre-med stuff, was type 2. Judging by that, I am assuming that once you change your major, you would be accepted to the school.
Hope this helps :)

My daughter was deferred from early decision from TCNJ and we are still waiting for a reply. What did you decide to do? Are you going to change your major for a shot at getting in? After reading your post we are discussing calling TCNJ to perhaps change her major from psych to open options. Curious if you have done any research and what you decided.

i received the same letter as deviations. I did not change my major and shortly after received an email stating that they were doing a second review of my application. Supposedly I will hear back from the college soon as to my acceptance.
