Is this an appropriate college admissions essay topic?

Hi,
I'm applying to Rutgers University and recently wrote an essay draft. The question is about diversity (How will you contribute and benefit from the vibrant community of _____University?)

I settled on writing about my day at church. However, my friend said that religion is the last topic college admissions officers want to read about.

I really doubt that my essay will offend. However, I would hate to reduce my chances of getting accepted just because of the topic I selected.

Should I write about something else or stick with what I have?

I don’t think this topic really helps you. The diversity prompt is a great place for a URM or first gen or disabled person to write about their experiences.
The problem is not that you offend anyone, it’s that you are missing an opportunity to write on another topic where you can stand out.

Personally, you can make anything sound interesting.
All of these essays ultimately come down to your character and writing, whether you’re writing about church or the flying spaghetti monster!

I personally would steer away from religion, politics unless absolutely necessary or if it was a religious school (not in your case). You don’t know what the adcoms religious views are and it may clash with yours. They are human. There are a lot better topics.

I vote for the flying spaghetti monster!

How does your day at church relate to diversity?
