Hi all! This is Kit's friend, "hijacking" her account (too lazy to make my own, lawlz). Anyways, I have an urgent question - is band an extracurricular? I play clarinet in my school-based band, which meets everyday during 6th period (it's a class). We prepare for music contests, solo contests, and concerts, all of which are out of school. However, on my common app and other apps a few months ago, I put clarinet as an extracurricular for 5 hours a week, 30ish weeks a year. I think that since band is an elective that we don't have to take, and the stuff we do in there is to prepare for outside stuff, this is justified. My other band friends think so too, and my counselor agreed with me. She said that since I've been playing for so long, it's important I put that on there. However, another teacher of mine did not agree that it is an EC. I've already been accepted to my first choice school (it's in the East Coast), and I'm not sure if I'm being paranoid or not, but if it's not considered an EC, does that mean I was wrongfully admitted? I mean, the adcoms obviously saw it both on the activities list and my transcript...

Anything you spend time on outside of school counts as an EC. Playing an instrument is definitely an EC. You’re fine!

Yeah, it’s definitely an EC… Especially if you do marching band like me. ^.^

Lol I’m a clarinet player too… And my band period is 6th too… Haha

Oh, ok. So it’s fine that I put the hours I spend in class? (7 hrs/wk for 34 Wks/yr.)? That’s what I’m worried about. We spend those hours preparing for outside stuff, but it’s still during school that we prepare.
