^^we sent 2010 tax returns, and actually just sent did the requested ones yesterday

Did Anyone else’s look like mine?

@wampum: I think you DEFINITELY GOT IN… now I’m starting to believe I was wait-listed.

Haha I think we’re all reading into it too much. Penn is need-blind. The financial aid office never sees the application or admission… Especially not when it still hasn’t been released…

That’s a good point wampum so if the letters were sent directly from Penn’s financial aid office, then they should not be any indication of an admission decision. But good luck to all who applied! I’m anxiously awaiting my decision as well.

But doesn’t the financial aid office have to come up with our FA package at this time? I know you’re right about reading too much into this; I just can’t take the wait any longer.

the financial aid office prepares a financial aid package for every single applicant, and the office of admissions is responsible for attaching them to the decisions last minute.

Oh, I see. How come some people didn’t receive the letter (even if they didn’t send out their tax returns)? I just don’t understand why Penn would waste their money on sending these letters to everyone; why not an email?

I agree with you albbymur, it seems unusual for them to actually mail a paper copy of the letter when emailing it would be much more convenient. And it’s also weird that not everyone who hasn’t submitted their tax returns received a letter. Is it possible that they’re going alphabetically or something. Maybe the rest of the people like splokey’s daughter will receive their reminders in the mail tomorrow? I don’t know for sure, but that’s just a thought. I submitted my parents’ most recent tax returns so I won’t be getting a letter wither way but I’m pretty sure I only got one piece of snail mail from Penn in the last 5 months since I applied. So it does seem really suspicious that they would pick and choose who to mail out these letters to.

Penn uses paper since it is still likely that parents (i.e. the people sending this information) don’t use email, and letters are still the gold standard when it comes to official correspondence.

If you have not sent your tax return, you will be contacted by SFS regardless of whether you actually got in.

SFS and Admissions do not communicate with each other. At least when I applied, you do not get your financial aid package until you get your official admissions packet; decisions are posted online without regard to financial aid. SFS will put together financial aid packages for all applicants, and the packages of those who are not admitted will be set aside.

The ONLY indication that you are likely to get in is a “likely letter.” Any other correspondence is purely informational and gives you no indication of admission changes. The reason some receive the letters from SFS earlier than others is that it physically takes a long time to go through all of the financial aid applications and to mail letters to applicants.

thank you for the clarification, chrisw.

Penn’s been dealing with Admissions/Financial Aid for two centuries now… I don’t think they’d still be slipping up or letting any secrets out like this, hahaha

More like two and a half centuries, but I’m pretty sure it hasn’t been the same people the entire time. :)

hahaha true, true. and they’ve only been using computers for probably 10 years. but i still think we have to give them more credit than to think they would reveal decisions early “by mistake”

I’m honestly dying to know!! I can’t wait till thursdayyyyyy. I haven’t gotten a Financial aid letter! D:

I am taking this as a good sign. I do not think UPenn would spend time sending letters to people if they did not plan to admit them. I had similar situations with Rice and Amherst. Both were missing my mid year report (my counselor is a bit disorganized) and I was contacted by the schools. Shortly after my counselor submitted the report, I got an early write from Amherst, and later an acceptance to Rice.

In any case, we will find out if this is an indication in a few days :)

Don’t take a financial aid letter as something it isn’t Sprinter. You are delusional if you do, grasping on to false hope that will tear and you will fall with your dreams crushed in your hands.

HAHAHAHAHA a little harsh…

^ I know right…

I still don’t think they would ask for financial aid info this late in the game and then reject someone… we shall find out our fates in a few days anyway.

then again… this is the week that the admissions staff is still sitting in committee making sure that the class of 2016 is the exact class they want… so anything can happen. as dean furda said, “no student’s decision is final until it is posted”

There are some past threads of people posting about the same letter… If someone wants to take the time to go through it and see if the people got in go for it…

I’m sure there are more than just these…
