How is this ack27s fault?? He specifically told his friend not to copy his lab and to only use it as a reference. Plus they are lab partners and at my school, the teachers specifically say that on labs it is fine if students collaborate on conclusions/discussions/speculations, etc as long as they write their own version and make it clear on their paper that they understand the concepts/ideas being discussed. Sharing ideas is ENCOURAGED. For aspiring scientists, doctors, etc. to not be allowed to share ideas is the stupidest thing I have ever heard of. Collaboration is VERY important in the scientific, medical, and business worlds.

There are just no words to describe how immature you are being, ack27. You asked for other people’s opinions on an issue and don’t agree with some of their responses as to what “cheating” is. Is that really cause to start calling them names?

People can have a honor code without being a “friendless social outcast”. Heck, if you take that definition literally, then you are saying that society accepts such transgressions on intellectual property. That is a damn sad society you live in and I’m glad I’m not a part of it.

just tell the truth if she is going to give you a zero, or you will regret it…

but if it’s just 5 points, don’t snitch.

You guys clearly don’t realize that patents are routinely violated by big businesses who can get away with stomping on the little guy and out-lawyering them.
P.S. Posting in an epic thread.

ack… your words were inappropriate. you crossed the normal societal boundary that should never be crossed. now we will mock your immaturity.

it looks like ack was gone last night. and i find it funny that he came to college confidential…

I find it funny that you use “big words” but you misspelled “your.”

what are you talking about taspplicant? i find it funny that your second post was in this thread…

I would give your friend a chance to tell the teacher. If he doesn’t, then I would let the teacher know what happened. At my daughter’s school, part of the honor code is to come forward when they know someone has violated the honor code. You may still be in trouble if your teacher has specifically said you were suppose to do your own lab write-up, but at my daughter’s school it is ok to share lab work/report.

I see so many students asking people to read their college essays on CC. It really just doesn’t make sense to me. How would you proof if someone has stolen your original essay.

WOW maturity… how society expects you to act. another example of the system’s suppression of real emotion and actions.

Don’t you know no one alive can always be an angel?
When everything goes wrong, you see some bad.
But I’m just a soul whose intentions are good.
Oh lord, please don’t let me be misunderstood.

my god is my judge. no gown, no gavel.

-weezy f baby

I sympathize with the OP.

My friends and I sometimes trade assignments - for IDEAS. None of us would be so dumb as to mimic someone else’s paper or paraphrase wholly, but there have been a lot of nights when someone Facebooks me saying, “God, I’m not sure how to start this essay. Can I see what you did?” and I’ll PM mine right over.

There’s a big trust factor. We’re all good students, we’re all independant thinkers, but it’s nice to be able to see examples sometimes and modify our approach a little. We take it for granted that no one will be an a** and copy-- because that’s just stupid.

But I see no problem with what the OP did. Sometimes my friends and I even tried to work through AP labs together, because they’re pretty difficult.

He got unduly punished.

Your sense of humor is silly. Also your logic is flawed.

at least i have a sense of humor man. lighten up. tryna take a free shot at me… nah buddy

Wow… that’s harsh. In our school, Biology labs are turned as one paper per group… so basically one person works on the whole thing…
(usually me)

And now that I’m a Biology TA, I figure out the teacher never grades it, the TA grades it… sometimes, she just gives perfect scores for the assignment if its an easy one…

such truth. when i read that i can’t help but think how trivial school is and how i worry about the stupidest things.

p.s. this thread is so epic. thanks everyone! and i’m sorry for saying loser to dear. my bad haha.

This is cheating beyond a doubt. I cannot believe that you would even consider for a moment that it would be a good idea. You said earlier that it was easier just to send your friend the lab report rather than explain the situation. However, the easy thing to do and the right thing to do are not often the same thing. Yes, that was irresponsible of your friend to put you in that situation, but ultimately, you are to blame for giving him the report. Situations such as this worry me greatly about the state of morals in our society. The simple fact that you and so many other people do not see anything wrong with this act is frightening, but I believe that this is what the majority of our society is degenerating to. It is not your teacher’s fault or your school’s fault… YOU could have completely avoided this situation be doing the honorable thing and not given your friend your lab report. If you get a 0, hopefully you will learn something from this experience. At my high school, not only would you recieve a 0 on the lab, you would go to a hearing in front of the Honor Council, an elected body of students that investigates honor violations. At the very least, you and your friend would be lucky to get several in-school suspensions. Be careful and do not let something like this occur again.

sorry, i have friends that i consider greater than … school? oh yeah right.

degenerating to helpfulness… sounds like an oxymoron.

is it really honorable to not send my lab partner my lab report and friend?

that’s false.

i would hope they would find me not guilty of 1st degree cheating as an accomplice. my defense would be… “are you really trying to prosecute me over a chemistry lab report? do you not have anything better to do right now?” those would be rhetorical questions so i wouldn’t expect the THE Honor Council to answer them. you know what… no. i would seek a plea bargain. i would acknowledge that sending a lab report is cheating in hope that they won’t tell any teachers or faculty so my “honor” and “reputation” will not be lost. yes that’s it.

i thought that was appropriate.

finally, you mentioned something about the “state of morals in our society.” to use my situation as an example of this “state” is quite an under state ment actually. our society is a cut-throat competitive environment. everyone tries to live the ideal life and make people think they’re good people by developing an “honorable” reputation. please… you make me laugh… haha!.. seriously

"sorry, i have friends that i consider greater than … school? oh yeah right. "

Then that is your choice. But don’t hypocritically attack the system, then complain that it isn’t treating you well.

Let’s understand crime and punishment. You email over the lab report when your friend is tired and overworked. Result: He plagiarizes it. Crime.

Your teacher, being not comatose, sees that they are plagiarized and you are partners. She gets angry at an infraction of academic integrity, and bad things have/may happen(ed). Punishment.

You have two options:
- Explain what happened
- Don’t explain what happened

If you want to reject the system, don’t complain that you fall prey to it.

just because i reject the system doesn’t mean i can escape it. i’m still working on that…

There is nothing wrong with a little bit of cheating or a lot. I once completed a whole online college class for some cash. But the point is you got caught, if you want to be a dumb ass and rebel go ahead. I’d prefer to go with the system and occasionally exploit it to my advantage.

Then stop complaining. If you break the rules of the system, you get in trouble. This thread just shows that you are still a product of the system you hate. So don’t be. Accept the 0 and move on. Unless, of course, your attitude is actually a sham?
