I'm number 25 out of 608 students, so I'm in the top 5%...barely. Of course I wish I could have made it in the top 10, but it's too late for that now. I think I can push into the top 20 at least though...

Is 25 a bad class rank for the Ivies?

I'd appreciate all the answers!
Thank you! :)

That won’t be an issue so long as your transcript shows that you took the most challenging curriculum available at your school and the rest of your application is strong.

Like YG&D says, the rank itself, without context of your rigor of transcript, isn’t that informative. If, you’ve excelled at one of your school’s toughest offerings in terms of classes, then I’d say you’re a viable candidate. If you are clearly recognized as one of your schools top scholars, then you’re viable. If not, then w/o any other substantive hook, you’re not a viable applicant given today’s level of competitiveness.

I believe I was tenth or eleventh in my graduating class of 210. However, very few of the people above me took a more rigorous class load. In my year, four went to Ivies – I to Yale and the other 3 to UPenn and had lower class ranking than me.

let me put this in perspective for you, I went to a regular public school, I graduated in the top 10% of my class. That’s right, not even top 5%. I got into Yale, everyone else went to lesser ranked schools, Val went to local state school(to be fair, it was where he wanted to go and he entered as a second semester sophomore…) Sal went to Rice, 4 people ended up at UPenn…

*my school only reports deciles though, so I’m not sure if they knew exactly where I ended up in the pool, but they had my transcripts, they knew I had no 4.0

Alright, I understand. I’m doing well in my classes, but I don’t exactly have a 4.0 for the 1st semester…I think I might stand out enough to be a viable candidate though, hopefully. I know rank isn’t everything, but of course I’ll do my best and try to bump up a few ranks. :)
