I'm picking out classes for next year forecasting. A class called Science Research is offered at my school. It's not really a class because it's outside school day schedule (meetings afterschool, independent research, etc). Basically students that take it do original research and submit papers for publications and compete in science competitions. Credit is 1.0 /but/ apparently it's given out based on how well you do in the competition (I'm not sure if you have to win/place/top whatever).

Notes from the class description:
- present papers at the Oregon Junior Academy of Science
- compete in the Oregon Junior Science and Humanities Symposium and Northwest Science Exposition research competitions

My courseload next year (sophomore):
Pre-Calc
Health 2
Net Games
Study Hall
AP US History
AP Lang
AP Chem
Spanish III

Does it seem like too much? Does the class sound worth taking?

I actually took a science fair class where I did the same thing. I did cancer research outside of school; personally, it was worth taking. Looks good on college apps too :)

Seeing as 3 APs is not too much to handle…

Are you interested in this type of science research?

Options:
Yes - Take the class
No - Don’t take the class

Pick one

I’m worried I won’t get the 1.0 credit though. Would I still be able to put it on college apps if I didn’t technically get the credit?

I think you missed my point, I told you to pick one of my options and you picked neither. Not everything has to be about college apps you know…

Ah that was more in response to FutureExonian, but I see your point. I will be picking yes ^^ sounds interesting and I have some ideas for my research…

You’ll be busy, but I don’t think you’ll be too loaded, considering this is going to be one of your only extracurricular activities. If you have lots of sports or clubs after school, I think this may be over the top, and you’re grades will start to slip.

I’d really just ask yourself if you’re more excited to actually be doing the work, or if you just want an edge for college. For me, I can’t push myself unless I love what I’m doing, but I know people who can work their butt off on a boring topic if they know it will benefit them. Just find out which one you are and go from there :)

Great, you can ask a member of your school’s faculty about how credits are awarded. My guess is that they give you credit upon completion, but I obviously don’t know for sure.
