Is this course load a death sentence?

Hey guys! I'm going to be attending UNC in the fall, and I'm going to orientation in a couple of weeks. I've been looking at courses but I'm having trouble deciding how many courses to take. This is what I've been thinking about (of course it's not set in stone, but if not this, then a similar course load):

MATH 130
ASTR 101/101L
STOR 72
BIOL 101/101L
HEBR 101

That adds up to 18 hours, which I know is a lot, but what I'm most worried about is the two lab classes. Do you guys think that taking two labs in a semester is a horrible idea? Biology is required for my major, but astronomy isn't - I just really want to take it cause it looks interesting.

First, you will not be allowed to sign up for 18 hours at orientation. Everyone’s situation and academic ability is different, but I would not recommend doing all that your first semester. Take a little lighter load until you get accustomed to college life, then beef up your course load second semester. You don’t want to bottom out your GPA first thing.

Ahh, see I didn’t know that. Can you only register for 15 hours or something? I guess I’ll find out.
Thank you! I suppose I’ll have to settle for taking astronomy some other semester, maybe.

I’ve heard a lot of people take astronomy 101 ‘just for fun’ and end up hating it because it’s all math problems and online homework. I’ve also heard that ALL lab sections are graded on a curve - just a heads up. Also, echoing the advice of others, I wouldn’t take 18 hours first semester. While it may seem feasible (after all you got into UNC, right?), it’s absolute hell unless you’re prepared for it. Take our word for it.
