Hi, I am going to be a Junior in HS, and I want to apply to NCSA High School Drama program, so I am really pushing it this summer to get some credentials in.
Liat in South Pacific.
Internship at out local museum (I know not theater related, but I might become a history major)
Helping with costumes
Helping with props
Helping with publicity
Helping paint the set
Designing Asian makeups for me and some other people in South Pacific.
Designing the cast t-shirts
Asst. Chairing a 30th Anv. Cookbook for our theater.

Is this enough for this summer?? I have also been stage manager for a few other shows, and done costumes, sets, etc.

Thanks for all your help.

theaterbrat,

I am not sure that anyone here could tell you if this was enough. There are people here who have extensive resumes and gotten into colleges and people who have done only a few shows and have been selected at top colleges. There is just no way of knowing. It will surely depend on your audition. I could tell you, though, what a remarkable place NCSA is (which I am sure you already know). We live about 30 minutes away and my daughter has some friends attending there now. She will also be a junior, and there are a few in her performing arts high school who will also be auditioning for their senior year. They are doing the summer program now which is also supposed to be fantastic! My daughter won't be auditioning...she loves the entire musical theater package that she gets at her high school and you have to specialize at NCSA. Good luck to you! Just try to get some great monologues together and "break a leg!"

Thank you for all your advice!! It is great that you live so close to there, we visited there for my birthday this year (How geeky is that??) and I was very impressed. I have heard a lot about the summer program, I want to do that so bad, but we can't afford the tuition.

Theaterbrat,

I have to agree with Kaysmom in that there is really no way to tell what is enough in terms of experience to get you into NCSA. My d has been involved in A LOT of theater and music and also attended NCSA for two summers in their music program (not drama). She decided to audition for the drama program for her senior year (you do 2 monologues and a song, if I remember correctly), but she was waitlisted and eventually was not accepted, which in the end worked out well as she, too, is MT all the way and they do not have an MT program at NCSA. She does have a good friend, a year younger, who has been accepted at NCSA for her senior year. She has similar experiences (probably more on the drama end than my d) and she attended Governor's School for drama last summer, which could have helped. I think, though, that it comes down to the impression you make at the audition and what they are looking for (i.e boys v. girls, types, etc.) I think they only accepted 22 for next year (it is so much more competitive now that it is tuition-free for NC residents!) Good luck to you if you decide to go for it! You never know until you try (and it will give you audition experience that is very similar to college auditions, if nothing else.) If you do get a chance to go for a summer, you will love it. It was a very valuable experience for my d. Also, try to see if your local arts council (or similar organizations) offer scholarships for summer study. My d got some summer tuition money that way.
