Is this Financial Aid advice correct?

My son has been accepted into a state college here in Texas with a reasonable financial aid package, as well as to an Ivy League School which hasn't revealed his financial aid package yet. I was told by someone in the Financial aid office of the state school that it's OK for him to accept the financial aid package and if he goes on to the Ivy school he can just let them know that he wont be attending (the state school). Is that correct? He doesn't want to lose out on his 'safety' offer but he doesn't want to do anything unethical.

Yes, go ahead and accept the offer in-hand, and then withdraw the acceptance to the state school if the ivy financial aid is workable and you son would prefer to go there and send them the deposit.

Congratulations!

The following is my understanding, based on a situation that we had.

My son was being asked to make deposit prior to May 1 for housing priority and to register early for classes. If he did not, he would not have been allowed to register until August, and he would go to the bottom of the list for housing choices. The deposit is still refundable until May 1.

We sent in the deposit before we even had a financial package. He registered for fall classes already, and has housing priority. If he decides to choose another school, I believe that he can. He must write a letter to the school where he sent in a deposit, do so prior to May 1, to let them know that he won’t attend, and then he may send a deposit elsewhere.

I do NOT think that one is allowed to send in two deposits.

If I am incorrect, please do let us know.

At state schools in California, it is possible to accept *the financial aid package *without accepting the admission offer or making a commitment deposit. Ask if you can do the same at your schools.

Also, at most schools, you have until May 1st to make your commitment deposit - there is generally no need to do so before that date. If a school has asked you to commit before then, ask for an extension in writing.

Fairdeal…Yes, it’s ok to accept and then decline later.

However, does the Texas school have some kind of deadline prior to May 1st? If so, what is it?

Thanks all ! (super fast responses - I guess it’s an important week and so the traffic is high here) May 1 is the next deadline and I hope to have found out from the Ivy school. So I’m going to go ahead and accept the financial aid from the state school.
