Is this going to get me fired???

Alright so heres the situation; at my job (7-11) my manager didnt get the adressing of my paychecks correct so one of my paychecks ended up goin to another store. The manager called the other store asking for the paycheck, which they confirmed they had. However when she gets there they apparently couldnt find it. So a week later i get a second copy of the check from the company. I took that check and deposited into my savings account. Four weeks later i get the original paycheck in the mail. Why? i have no idea. I'm geussing the other store found it and mailed it to my house. So now i have an extra paycheck which i did not work for. I'm a pretty honest person and my initial reaction was to report it to the manager, but now i'm having second thoughts. how much trouble can i get into if i cash the dam check? i dont know if they have some sort of tracking system for the money they give out. Should i risk it and cash the money? This is my first job and i wouldnt want to like get a federal offense or something and never get another job again. What would you do???

Give it back to the manager. Don't be a dope. It's your first job. Don't start out life as a crook.

Keeping the extra paycheck will make you a thief liable for prosecution. The company is very likely to find out, and when they do, you are likely to get fired or, if you've left, be forced to repay the $ immediately. You'll also get a bad reference.

I've gotten extra paychecks, and I have sent them back. I didn't need to ask anonymous strangers what to do. I just followed my conscience. That's what people do who are honest.

Don't be stupid. Not only can you get fired, you can also get into trouble with the police (and from the sound of things, you probably will get caught by your company if you cash the check). Aside from being immoral, it just isn't worth the massive and idiotic risk.

Report the mix-up to your manager ASAP.

Have you ever stopped to think what happens when you cash a paycheck? Do you think that the bank just throws away the check, forgets about it entirely, and hands you cash?

Seriously...people trying to cash duplicate checks is not as uncommon as you think. And it's pretty easy for the store to find out

This isn't a question that you should be pondering.

Fired/arrested, yes. Turn the check in to your manager.

Don't risk it. You'll get big kudos from your manager.

And there's a good chance your check has been voided, but in case it hasn't turn it in to your manager. I was in a similar situation a couple years ago when I started at my first job. I turned in the check and my boss was like "oh they voided it went they sent another, but thanks..."

haha aside from the well deserved kudos from the manager, i'm pretty sure now that the check has been cancelled anyway. Alright i'm turnin it in. i'm once again the ppl's champion....

yea cards4life just read ur response, def hear what your sayin, it makes sense. i just got so worked up about this, almost went crimina. haha how sad would it be if i went in to cash it when it was already voided but still got in trouble.

"ppl's champion" wow..... noobs

if u work for any company tht pays taxes they will keep accounting books and logs, after a bank reconciliation process you will b found to b guilty of fraud an prosecuted if ur suspected to hve knowingly done so. so jus give the check back.

it would be like robbing 7-11 lol

I would cash it and when they ask I would be just like "Oh I thought it was the next paycheck or something, I didn't realize it was for the same pay period" or something like that. (actually I would usually believe it myself because I don't check the pay periods, I just check my balance) But yeah since you are gonna return it anyways just return it. They probably canceled it anyhow.

I would pocket it and if my manager threatened to fire me, I would say "well, you can't fire me because I QUIT. That's right, Apu--I QUIT." At this point I would walk out of the store and slam the door on the way.

Everyone who writes a check can find out whether or not it was cashed. Included in every bank statement you get is a list of the checks you've written that've already been cashed. Beyond that, you can call the bank at any time and ask if a specific check has cleared. I'm sure it works differently for businesses, but they are definitely able to trace their checks just like any individual would be. That's assuming that they didn't go ahead and stop the check when it became clear that it was missing.

not that i would do it or anything, but imo it will probably be overlooked by 7-11

I think the worst will happen is they reverse the check if it hasn't been canceled already.

cut it up with scissors
