Okay well I’m having the hardest time deciding my schedule for next year (11th grade). My friends tell me that taking all the hard classes will be helpful, but my gpa will be much lower.

My schedule is looking like it will be:

HL Spanish 3
AP Calculus
AP Psychology
AP English
HL Chemistry
AP US History

If I take that schedule my UC Gpa will probably be 3.83…but if i take College prep in english, chem, and us history my UC gpa will be around a 4.08.

I want to take the hardest schedule and i do have a chance to get a 4.08 UC Gpa with it too but it will be very unlikely…So I really like UCSB and SDSU, but i also like UCSD, UCI, Cal Poly, and UCLA too so will a 3.83 in all ap and honors be good enough for all those schools???

I also heard UCSD does an uncapped gpa…is this true?

Yes, UCSD does uncapped GPA. I thought we went over this in another thread :P. For UCSD, the best route is the one that gets you the higher GPA. But, like I said earlier, you can get a 4.5 jr year if you just try hard! You know you have what it takes =P.

Overall, the best route is the one with more AP classes! The classes will definitely look better on schools with a more subjective admissions system. Also, all classes that aren't HL and AP but are university approved courses are "College Prep." College prep courses aren't big at all. All the classes I took that were not random are labeled college prep just because it is university approved. You'll definitely get into SDSU, but taking the harder schedule and getting better grades will get you into UCSB! Good luck.

Jas0n are you sure it is uncapped bc on the UCSD website it says a maximum of 8 semesters of uc approved honors/ap/ib courses........
Anyways here is another option if i go to summer school.

HL Spanish 3
AP Calculus
AP Psychology
AP English
Journalism
CP Chemistry (There is only one honors class and i would have journalism that period so i would have to take cp.)
CP US History (Summer school)

The most important criterion considered is the uncapped GPA, including a maximum of eight (8) UC-approved Honors, Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), or UC transferable college courses based upon the applicants self-reported academic history.

Emphasis on the title of the section. You guys are funny =D.

don't take all hard classes...its going to suck I promise, I'm taking all AP classes this year, and I regret it thoroughly...unless you're into killing yourself, I'd say take some easier classes...unless you can handle it...I guess it's not the worst thing ever....but its really pointless to take so many hard classes just for college, they dont care that much, I got rejected from UCLA with a 4.08+ GPA but got into all the others that you listed...its better to have a higher GPA and less AP classes, from what I have observed anyway...

"including a maximum of eight (8) UC-approved Honors, Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), or UC transferable college courses based upon the applicants self-reported academic history."
That means it's capped. It only gives you 8 extra points, no more. Even if you've taken 16 semesters of UC-approved honors, APs, you still only get 8 extra points.

From the UCSD Freshman Comprehensive Review Process
Grade point average x 1000 - Includes a maximum of eight (8) extra semester grade points for approved honors, AP, & UC transferable college courses. This component is capped at 4500 points

I've never heard of any UC doing uncapped GPA. CAn you show me the thread that you say this was discussed?

The first list sounds like a good list of classes to me.

I doubt that Spanish 3 will be much of a problem. AP pyschology is also one of the easier AP's, and I wouldn't worry about it. US history also isn't too hard. The main thing that you need to do is read the text, and do practice quizes that are provided for you online and in workbooks. Our school only offers AP chem and CP chem, so I can't give you any info on those.

Out of the schools that you listed, I doubt that you'll have much trouble getting into any of those schools execpt maybe UCSD (as long as your SAT scores are good). And even for UCSD, I've heard of A LOT of people with a lower GPA than 3.83 who got in.

Also, you have to remember that taking AP and honors classes right now is going to make you better prepared for when you actually get into college. Don't take the easier route, you'll regret it.

Thank You Everlasting13....I was waiting for someone to tell me that. I am almost sure i'm going to take the tougher schedule and hopefully I'll work hard enough to get a 4.08. Again thanks for the comments.

I had a 3.813 GPA unweighted and I got into UCSD and UCLA, I mean you really don't need ALL APs to get in, as long as you show that you are well rounded and can balance things as well as show evidence of leadership and commit to extracirriculars as well.
