Is this how it's going to be for the rest of my life?

I thought 9th grade was bad but now I'm in 10th grade and I have even more homework than before! I have to work on homework from the time I get home from school till the time I go to sleep everyday. I get no break, not even on the weekends. On the weekends I sit at my desk with my homework the whole day. I go on the internet when I get distracted but that's ALL I do. If I go to the store or I have to do the dishes or some other chore, the whole time I am worrying that I won't finish my homework. Why must teachers assign homework on the weekends? And having no friends or anyone to talk to doesn't help the matter much. I know its just going to get worse from here. In 11th and 12th grade I'll be doing the IB program which is even harder and then I'll go to college which is even harder than that. I'll only have a break once I'm out of college and that's much too long to wait. But I'll still have a job, which may even be harder than school.

Is this how it's going to be for the rest of my life? Will I ever get a break?

The struggle is real, but you’re not alone. I feel you, bro. I /hope/ it gets better.

Actually I’m a girl but thanks.

Oh no I’m a girl too. Sorry I’m just weird.

That was my sophomore year. And now I’m a junior and its even worse…

For the most part there isn’t daily homework in college, and you’ll get more used to the workload in time.

Oh good I’ll only have to deal with this until college. Hopefully.

High school gets much worse, yes. I was like you freshman year, but honestly, I wish I had cared less freshman year and more junior/senior years.

@elf4EVA for me it was the opposite. Didn’t take a challenging load fresh/soph year and took almost the most challenging load junior/senior.

I feel you. That’s pretty much my life too, sitting at my desk all day every day doing homework and getting distracted by the computer. I’m a junior right now and I don’t expect it to get any better. I just want to remind you that all of your hard work will pay off in the end when you go to a great college and earn a degree and start rolling in the dough, and I have no doubts that you will find a true friend somewhere along the road. It can be hard right now and you might feel lonely at times, but if you need a shoulder to turn to, you can always turn to your buddies on CC  internet hugs

Don’t any of you have study groups? The teachers generally have you exchange phone numbers and emails so that you can ask each other for help. Homework, in high school, shouldn’t take all of your time. I know that my son and his friends were active in sports and scouts and he just graduated in June. The kids had free time but they also helped each other so that they could do their sports, clubs, work schedules, etc.

Parent weighing in - YES! It does get better!

Somehow/someway, between high school and college you will figure out what you want to major in and then you will find yourself in classes that you really enjoy, and the homework won’t seem like drudgery. Also you will take electives that aren’t rigidly-mandated AP courses, and they’ll have interesting professors who are passionate about their subjects and you will suddenly wake up and find yourselves in the most amazing, exciting, and fabulous adventure that high school will seem like simply a bad dream.

Stick with it now and it will pay off later - seriously.
(I have college age students in their freshman and sophomore years and they are both having the times of their lives. You will too . . . just give it time)

Thanks everyone for the help.
@"aunt bea"‌ There probably are study groups but I wouldn’t know because, as I said, I don’t have any friends.

I really feel for you… I think all your hard work will pay off by getting into the best school for you. You will have more control of your time then. Hang in there! I worked so hard and now I have a fantastic career.

Try getting through homework faster and paying attention in class more so that you don’t have to study as much. Also, if your putting in 110% effort into a class that you already have well into an A+, you can lay off on the effort.

@dfafd2dfafd‌ I actually don’t study that much, it’s mostly homework from the teachers in addition to the studying. I think I’m going to start doing homework at lunch. Lunch is only 30 minutes but hopefully it will help.

Does your school have a homework limit? Like for ours we can get up to an hour a night in each class, so that’s 5-6 hours a night (plus I can’t start until I get home, which is ~6 every night). If the work is taking you longer than this, talk to your teachers and see how you can be more efficient.

For when I have more work than usual, I usually go to bed at 11:30 or so, wake up at 3:30 and work until 4, then sleep til 5:30 (when I have to wake up for school). If you do this for a couple weeks in a row you’ll not be in a good place, but it’s helpful for me during tech weeks of shows and such.

It sounds like you either need to work on your efficiency or drop a class (or drop down a level, so like AP to honors). Doing homework 100% of the time you’re not in school isn’t fun, good for you, or good for your future college application.

You can’t expect teachers to stop assigning homework over weekends or to lessen the load unless you talk to them. The ball is in your court - if you meet with your teachers and they neither change the workload nor gov eyou tips on how to work more efficiently, then you’ve earned the right to complain.

Also, if you’re still stressed out your senior year, you can always take a gap year in between high school and college to destress a bit. I’m taking a gap year currently, so feel free to message me if you have any questions. Good luck. :)

@LAMuniv‌ No, we don’t have a homework limit. The problem with dropping an AP class is that I don’t have any extracurriculars so my grades and hard classes are the only impressive things I have. I’m starting to do my homework more during school and this has helped me. Thanks for the advice!

@dsi411 The only thing I can say is to make friends. Like now. It may seem late for you to do so, but it is not. Trust me. I moved to a new school my SENIOR year of high school. When people see a new person in their school, senior year no less, its really hard to associate that person in the circle of friends they had accumulated for 3 years. School started late August and I was content on just saying screw it, I’m just going to head off to college in a year anyway. First two days were miserable. But you have to take the initiative yourself. I a shy person to begin with but I just threw myself out there. I’m in all AP’s and you seem to be in a lot of AP classes. This means that the people in your classes are actually vested in school and not to caught up in the trivialities of high school life. Even with my 8 AP classes, it is so refreshing to gripe about it with my class mates or to just talk about life in general. Your school day will be filled with things that have nothing to do with school (exciting things), but you’ll still be getting your work done. This will also allow you to be open in class discussions because you are comfortable with everyone. I thought coming to my new school that I wouldn’t get to know anyone. Now, only 4 weeks into school, I can have a legit 5 minute conversation with anyone in all of my classes. When you put yourself out there, it will make things so much easier. You may think everyone will shun you but that is virtually impossible. Also make friends with both genders. Having a girlfriend ( a boy who’s a friend in your case if your not into that) will provide a healthy distraction wink wink ( for emphasis). Also, the work gets easier. Maybe it’s just me, but I know how to study and plan my work now. I mean, I have to; I’ve been in school for 3 years now. The only stressful part is these college applications, but the reward that they entail makes me work harder. Also I know what I like, so those EC’s that seemed time consuming are actually relaxing.

I promise it will get better. You have to stick it out, but you also have to give yourself a chance first

@dsi411‌ I always assumed that you were a boy tbh
